Since signing up with AM I’ve been on the lookout for a Alvarez AP70 both new or used. While doing so I’ve also been coming across the Alavarez AP66. Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on the differences between the two in terms of playability and tone and where in Canada can I order a new one…for those of you who live here. Thanks and look forward to the feedback.

          Hi Ivan,

          OPINION ALERT….(ha)

I recently purchased an AP70 from Musicians Friend over the holidays and had a great experience. Very well packaged, came quick and set up perfect out of box. I also purchased a Folk guitar case to go with it, with same experience. (there might be a Memorial Day sale going on now, FYI), but looks like the AP70s are on back order on musiciansfriend, which is common with the AP70 because they are a hot item. I found out later that mine came with a (limited runs) soundboard transducer, which was not a listed feature, but has been adequate for recording digitally, so others may/may not come with this.

The AP70 has the spruce top and rosewood back/sides which will give a “OPINION brighter” tone. The AP66 is all mahogany which will give a “OPINION softer fuller”, but not any less wonderful tone. That is a personal preference.

I really really like my AP70 (really). Its pretty, sounds beautiful, along with all the benefits of the parlor size, and is very budget minded. Every time I pull it out of the case I think I am playing a much more “expensive” guitar.

          AGAIN MY OPINION.

          and welcome to the Forum!

Thanks for the feedback and demo Duncan!
I’ve read a lot of good things about the AP70 but not that much on the AP66. Good info to know.
I’ve seen the AP70 on Musicians Friend but apparently that particular model doesn’t ship to Canada. Same with Guitar Centre, not sure why.
Anyway. Thanks again and by the way…great playing!

Also do a Forum search for AP66. Bryce, the moderator, has this model and has written his thoughts on it.

Hey Ivan, not sure what part the country you’re at, but in Calgary the Alvarez dealer is St John’s Music. I recently picked up a Canadian made Art & Lutherie Roadhouse, great sounding parlor at an affordable price.

Thanks Scott. I’m in Ontario. Maybe I’ll try another dealer search and see if I missed something.
Never heard of the A&L Roadhouse. Ill check that one out as well.
                    Thanks.
