Last year Brian did an arrangement of the melody to this classic tune (ep605). I expounded on his wonderful teaching by going over some authentic swing/Western swing/gypsy jazz type chord voicings and how I would play rhythm for this.

I wrote out a couple of the chord voicings too.

Thanks to Laurel C for reaching out and reminding me I had done this. Hah.

Hope it makes sense and is helpful to someone!

Excellent playing Bill, you nailed it. Thanks for the extra insight on the lesson with the progression and variations on what the alternatives are. I liked that G6 chord voicing, just need to work on the chord transitions to get them smoothed out. You do it very well.

The further explanations of the chord structure was outstanding. I knew this forum was going to get some legs. It might end up being one of the best parts of it, because members can teach too ya know.

Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

Thanks Michael. I think the beauty of these spread shell voicings, as they are called, is how easy they can slide around and transition into each other. Well worth spending some time to get the fingering down and it opens up a lot of rhythm voicing ideas for this kind of music. You can even use the different inversions and passing moves chords over simple 2-3 chord songs to give them a different feeling. That’s what was going on in a lot of Western Swing.

Congratulations Bill on your lesson to play this iconic song with your alternative chord voicings. I certainly learned a lot from your delivery, which was clear, concise and exactly what this ‘Members Teaching Members’ section was designed for.
              Many thanks Bill.
