I’m practicing a bass guitar piece which is in 4/4 time but there are 3 bars where it goes to 2/4 time (at the end of each verse) and immediately returns to 4/4 time. I’m having difficulties counting this. Would anybody be able to explain how I count it? I’ve included a snippet of the tab below.

Should the dotted quarter note be counted 1&2 with the eighth note counted &?

Hi Joe,
The dot at the quarter note extends the note’s length by 50% so you would count it as “1 and 2” and then play the eighth note at “and” and then back to “1and2and3and4and” at 4/4 time (next bar).
Hard to explain it in words but hope this helps.🎸JoLa

Thanks YoLa. I’ve never seen a 4/4 time signature with a single bar of 2/4 in each verse and it threw me for a loop!
Now, it’s also in the rhythm tab and this one I can’t figure out and have no idea how to count. I think the 16th notes are confusing me.

Ok, so this one involves some math skills 😄
Break everything down to the lowest denominator, in this case the 16th notes.
As you know 1/4 = 2/8 = 4/16
Therefore 2/4 = 4/8 = 8/16
So in the signature of 2/4 you have 8 16th notes.You can count them as 1 e & uh, 2 e & uh
In this case you get: 1e & uh, 2 e &uh (and then you hold it for another quarter note in the next bar)

There are 6 strums in that bar and, if I understand you correctly, it would go something like this, right?
1 e – & – uh – 2 – e – & uh (which ties over the next bar for another 1/4 note)
