Okay theory geeks, I learned something today that I thought was pretty neat.
An 11 chord, eg. G11 is formed by adding an F chord over a G chord, A11 is formed by adding a G chord over an A chord etc.
Think about this;
A dominant G11 chord is an extended chord formed from the G7 and contains the intervals-
1, 3, 5, flat7, 9, 11…….more notes than fingers, right
the G chord has the 1, 3, 5 and the 1, 3, 5 of the F chord becomes the flat7,2(9), 4(11)
Often the 5th of a chord is omitted without losing the nature of the chord and in the 11 chord, the major third is often omitted as it clashes with the 4(11). The 11 chord thus becomes a kind of sus4 chord.
An easy fingering, for the G11 is to play the F chord on strings 4,3,2, +/- 1 and sound the G on the low E string while muting the 5th string. This becomes a slideable chord that can be substituted for any dominant chord.
If I got any of this wrong, theory geeks please chime in.
John
