Today started off a tad on the crappy side. Morning visit to the doc’s seen my BP up again, not to the dangerous height of a few weeks ago but up on last weeks check up..Anyway, I thought today couldn’t get any worse I decided to cheer myself up and go guitar hunting…
Tonight I picked this up, It is I think a 07 Squier SE strat. It is going to need a bit of TLC as it looks to have the original strings on it and the factory applied stickers are still on the backs of the tuners…
Why Mr bond? I hear you ask.. well, check out the first three digits of the serial number( bottom picture)...Billy..

Billy,
Aha….Mr. Bond I presume…..a 007 Squier….great! Looks like it was made in Indonesia which is good as I have read that some folks prefer the Indonesian made guitars to those made in China. I have both and like them equally.
Cosmetically, it looks to be in great condition. Have you had a chance to play it and if so how does it sound?Nothing like a guitar to get you out of the doldrums……….. I’m surprised it still has the tremolo bar. Often times, used guitars come without the trem…good deal.
Look forward to hearing some blistering tunes coming out that beauty!

Not plugged it in yet as the strings are done and not holding tune, This one needs to be stripped back and the set up done starting at the trem block which the strings are pulling up and out of its space, My plan at the end of the day is to upgrade the nut 9 if need be) and swap the pickups for Duncan single coils, I dont know what the pots are yet( still to take the pickguard off) but 500’s seem to be a better choice than 250’s which some Squiers come from the factory with…But I am getting ahead of myself here, the fret board needs some hydrate cos it hasnt been oiled since it left the factory.. Think I will take tomorrow off work and go buy some strings and things..Billy..

Billy,
Sounds good. Let the customers walk or take a bus for a change……guitar stuff is much more important than going to work…
Let us hear it before you go changing the pickups….it may sound great…Tim

Billy,
They sound good to me. Needed more volume and often times it’s the amp that really makes the pickups sing so not sure what amp you’re using but may want to try some different amp settings.

Billy, Very nice looking guitar and it doesn’t look like it has many miles on it. Enjoy,

Gary. Thanks Gary, for being ten years old it has lacked maintenance and being played. the neck feels great and I honestly think this is going to be a very very enjoyable guitar.

James is indeed a handsome fellow! We should do BP checks before and after guitar purchases to prove what we already know. Enjoy and congrats on the NGD.

Nice noodling, Billy- very sweet! Hope you enjoy it in good health because…
You only live twice… Glad to see that guitar’s usefulness was resurrected with you. (from a guy who’s married to an absolute Bond fanatic and has seen all of the movies more times than I can recall, THIS is the best Bond-ism I could come up with… (sigh)

The Squire looks like a good acquisition Billy. Really nice tone in the sound bite. Great playing btw; you give a really soulful feel to Brian’s beautiful composition. Hope the New Guitar Therapy helps the blood pressure. Take care man.

Years ago when the Squier guitar came out (maybe in 78) . Guitar center there on Hollywood blvd or maybe it was Sunset blvd. had them at $69 bucks and I quite sure they were Japanese made. I played on one and they were light and great to play on. I ended up buying a Jim Dunlop wah wah for about 80 bucks
The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Cold light of day and I have started the strip down and clean up before the setup..
Back plate off to see how the trem is set up, I think my plan here will be to block the trem off either by using a block of wood or coins, there is the other alternarive and that is adding a 4th spring which will also stabilise tuning
The rosewood fretboard was as dry as the gobi desert, 2 coverings of hydrate so far but it is going to need at least two more
The normal type of stress crack at the neck join, Im not sure if there is a fix to stop the crack spreading further, possibly a little superglue in there?, I’ll have to research that
Possibly upgrade the nut to bone or tusq, the factory nut does the job ok but you can see the plastic mould lines on it.
So, that is where I am now.Once I am satisfied that the fb is hydrated properly I will continue with doing a setup..Billy..

Billy,
Were you able to check and see if there was any fret buzz with the original strings on it? It would have perhaps given you an idea if the frets were ok or whether they needed to be leveled off……( have never done that but I think there is a fret leveler tool ).
Looks like you have a plan and are on your way to getting this beauty back to playing some music.Tim

Yes Tim, but as the trem was floating too high and the strings being as old and done as they were( I am pretty certain that these were the original strings from the factory) I ditched the strings as quick as I could and checked the neck and frets out with a straight edge and a rocker edge..
The setup for the time being is complete, took me about 3 hours today to take and make all the adjustments. I am still not too sure about the pickups, they still sound too tinny and bright so i might think about swapping them for a set of iron rail “pigiron” or Duncans or for that matter Fender “texas” pickups..
Guitar plays lovely, better action on this guitar than on my CV’60…Btw, forgot to mention .. the spring set up on the trem, if anyone has this on their Strat
IMHO this is wrong, the middle spring isn’t doing any work here as both outer springs are under more tension than the middle one.
Even though my trem is locked off, I believe that this is a better way to configure the springs( also gets rid of phantom rattles which come from lose springs vibrating..
