So I was just sitting strumming a few chords and quite liked A minor and E minor strummed alternately, then I wondered about playing riffs between these two chords, do I need to play my riffs based on the A chord or the E chord?…..does Brian have any lessons on this do you know please?

        Neil.

Lots of lessons cover this type of playing, which a lot of people call “call and response”. The lessons with “Solo Guitar” in the title seem to feature this type of structure. I think the “No accompaniment” filter highlights these.

Or look through the Rhythm & Lead Combined filter of the lessons. You can also filter for the E or A chords (I don’t think there’s a filter for the minor chords… but those use a different scale)

            Okay Neil,
If you would like a brain teaser, try this. Sorry though, this would be to play a lead over the chord progression. Lay down a rhythm track of 1 bar of A minor alternating with 1 bar of E minor in your DAW or on a looper. Play A minor pentatonic over the A minor chord and then E minor pentatonic over the E minor chord. You could initially try this is box 4, A minor pentatonic and box 1, E minor pentatonic where they overlap between frets 12-15. Now the challenge is to land on a chord tone of E minor, ie. E,G or B on beat 1 of the chord change and on a chord tone of A minor, ie. A, C, or E on beat 1 of the change back to A minor.
You could play strictly A minor pentatonic but it would sound better if you you hit an E minor chord tone on beat 1 of the chord change.
            Have fun.
            John

                Neill,
For your original question, I think you can play licks of either A minor pent or E minor pent between the two chords and both scales should sound great. The 2 scales share a lot of notes, E, A, G, D. The B of E minor is the 2nd of A minor, like a Dorian note addition. The C of A minor is the minor 6th in an E minor pent, like an Aeolian or E natural minor note addition.

Yes Neil,, his latest lesson is perfect lesson learning how to play riffs between the chords.. because all you need to remember is play the notes that build the chords.. you want minor or major progression ..something simple and basic to focus and see the concept.. anyway, loop pedal is fine,,i was just making messing on a loop station and yamaha totally deranged whatever but you need to focus on the key notes ..identify the key and chotds you intend to use ,,major ..you focus on major scale ..minor chords ..minor scale..keep it simple,, change keys,,learn how if you don’t know that first before riffs between chords.. a little reading /understanding of this in theory helps too alot!

DO type A minor and/or E minor in search bar at active Melody.. it should get you to some lessons in these two minor keys.. shound help to watch and listen to each lesson he explains well enough.. your question is really too broad to be answered specically..but if I may help by just your question.. I think the best answer is you need a better understand of basic theory.. Anyone and everyone should have a basic understanding.. Best way to start learning is from scratch..go review the beginner coarse even if you think you may know.. because the question suggests you don’t,, it’s okay we all been there,, If you know what makes a minor /major etc. just review the beginners coarse again and test your knowledge.. this is really a broad but easy question to answer and hope I helped!

What is the best DAW for guitar recording loops etc?….i used to use FL Studio 11 but its frustrating since i have to go into audio set up and change driver after recording a loop in order to listen to it.

And yes my music theory is non existent and i know learning the basics is going to help me alot.

As has been said, A min pent and E min pent both work well. Can also try to play simply chord tones, aceg over a minor, and egbd over e minor. Can also use the notes in either a C maj or G maj scale over either. That works because they are the same as a and e natural minor scales. A and E Dorian will also sound cool.

Basically, the only notes that are hard to make work here are the C# over a minor, and the g# over e minor. Otherwise, the rule is that you are always at most one fret away from a note that sounds good, if you hit something you think is a clunker.

                          Neil,
I use Presonus Studio One and I simply play it back after recording. I can copy and paste to extend my track or highlight a section and press a loop icon to play continuously. I would think most basic DAWs would have those functions.

                                Neil,
I bought the Studio One Artist at a local big chain music store. It came with the Audiobox 2 input interface. I think it was about $150 Canadian. I bought Presonus as it was compatible with pc (I’m not an Apple guy). I upgraded to the Professional version on a Black Friday sale directly with Presonus over the web.
I think most DAW’s are in the $100-150 range, although I think you can get a free trial of Reaper and I think Audacity is free period. You might want to discuss which DAW might be right for you with someone knowledgeable at a local music store. I don’t think many of them are very user friendly, they involve a lot of trial and error and a bit of a learning curve. Many of them may have way more features than you’re looking for. Maybe start a thread asking for suggestions.

                                  Neil,

John mentioned Audacity and Reaper. I have used both of them. As a newcomer to DAWs I would give Audacity a try. It’s open source so completely free. Some people have commented that it is difficult to use, but I found it much easier than the more complex DAWs that are out there. My only complaint was that after you save a project there is no going back on edits. Most other software does not have that limitation.

I am currently using Reaper. It is pretty full featured and has an unlimited trial period. It’s edits are non-destructive so you can always undo what you did even after you have saved a project. I was getting ready to purchase it when I started to do videos. Not to fond of its video handling so maybe I’ll go in another direction. But for audio I am pretty happy.

Well i just downloaded the trial version of reaper and already is so much better than FL Studio…..i need to test a couple more trial versions of software then make a decision….

                                    Thanks everyone
