When I 1st got my Squier CV 60’s I did nothing to it other than a quick set up and check of the radius. I decided that seeing as I am giving this months challenge a bash then I had best take it out the case and see what is indeed what…
Plugged it in an while I like the sound of the CV I have decided to put a gauge heavier strings on it and bring it up to 10’s, Popped in to the guitar shop while I was working today and picked up “Ernie Ball, Regular Slinky” strings. I am hoping that these drive the pickups and throw the sound better than 9’s( I hope that makes sense) Once I snipped off the old strings I noticed that the FB was looking a bit on the dry side…
You can see here just how dry the FB isA touch of Hydrate and we are beginning to see a difference
And finally it is complete ..
I am going to have to go through the motions of completing another set up because of the change of string gauge, String height and relief and a bit of work is needed on the nut as I can feel some of the strings sticking when I was de-tuning.
So, this should keep me busy for the rest of this evening…..Billy..

Bumping up to 10s from 9s shouldn’t make a dramatic difference in setup. Those Ernie Ball Slinkys are my favorite.

If you don’t get the extra push by moving to 10’s, try a set of pure nickel strings next time. The most dramatic improvement that I had in the tone of my electrics was when I made the switch to a pure nickel set. I use DR Pure Blues but Ernie Ball also makes them, They are called Classic Slinky’s and available in all gauges

Best to double check I think @idch79yahoo-com Marty, I am thinking the action will be a tad lower and the relief less but I wont know for sure until I take some measurements.
This is the first time I have put strings on vintage tuners, A tad different but I survived…Oh yeah, and these strings are not colour coded so extra care needed that I put the correct string in the correct place…..Billy..

So I went and broke my cardinal rule of “NO VIDEO” … Now bare in mind that I’ve not been playing of late, so ear plugs to cover the bum notes, I think my little Squier is now starting to find his voice
This is recorded on my phone and not through my PC………….

Hey Billy, nice playing, what vst are you using for the sound. Nice tone.
The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Hey Pete, No vst’s were used. That is just my little Marshell MG15dfx Amp, the backing track is being played through my P.C. using realplayer and recorded on my Samsung mobile phone..
Thanks very one for the kind comments, It has taken me an age to get back to guitar again, I am enjoying playing now which I wasnt doing before I took time out..
Thanks again ...Billy..

Eek! Is there a way to remove my email address from your post? Maybe a mod can do this?
I suppose it depends on the guitar neck. A flimsy neck might be more sensitive. I just changed the strings on my Steinberger — from baritone strings to 10s! (Of course, that’s an extreme case, but the Steinbergeer was built for that! And since it has a zero fret instead of a nut, there’s no issue with refiling the slots)

Hey Billy, sometimes it is good to break rules. Especially those self imposed ones that serve no purpose other than standing between you and progress. I think you have done a mighty fine job and am surprised how good the sound quality is in the video. You just added some motivation for me to post a challenge video. I recently had to buy a new PC and I just can’t manage to add guitar effects to the DAW. Now I think I could try the same setup you’ve been using.

You are getting a really nice sound and feel there, Billy.
At Keith/GnLguy’s earlier recommendation I switched to pure nickel strings a while back and really like them.

No, that’s the factory pickups in my Squier, The only recommended mod is to swap the trem block over for a stainless one which I have yet not done…
I am trying to get my guitar to sound how I think a guitar should sound just by using its settings and the settings on my amp..Billy..

Thanks Brian, it will take me a bit to settle into these 10gauge strings, when i change over then pure nickle will be next up.

Thanks again for all the words of encouragement, I came close to packing it all in and selling off my gear. But you know what happens, another tune comes along and then you get the bug again…hahaha
I am in the process of trying to find my guitars voice, I hear it as warm and slightly dark if that makes any sense to anyone, if It doesn’t then its care in the community for happy old me…
I think I am on the right track with the sound I have but possibly a touch too much reverb ( but that it something I can play with on my amp)
These are the amp settings I have at the moment
And my guitar selector is pos 4 ( that is middle and neck pick ups) with the vol at 7 and the tone on 5…..Billy..
