Hi Folks, Thinking of getting a new acoustic guitar some time soon. I know a few of you have an Alvarez (parlor??) As does our great Mentor Brian! Whats the difference between one of these compared to say a bottom/mid range Taylor? They certainly look different from a normal guitar. The fret board appears to be wider?? and the obvious head stock tuners. Any thoughts? thanks Phil

Phil, Alvarez parlor guitars come in different flavors, so if you’re looking for a solid top and solid sides and back you’re looking at around $800US or more. Small Taylor body sizes are the Grand Concert (e.g., 712) and a 12 fret (where the fingerboard joins the body) are smaller and very close to a parlor.

I own a Simon & Patrick (made by Godin in Canada) Woodland Pro Parlor with electronics and it sounds amazing – I got it new directly from a shop in Quebec for around $650. The Taylor has an ebony fingerboard and it also sounds great, but they are more expensive.

            Good luck.

            Cheers,

            Richard

Damit, I just found out there’s no alvarez parlor anywhere in Czech republic.
              Damit.

Anyway, I think it will depend on what taylor you have in mind. The AP70 gives me more classical guitar (wide neck, spacious frets) vibe than what I think about when I think Taylor, which has more country/western feel with narrow neck.

I have a Taylor Baby parlor guitar, and the sound it puts out is amazing to everyone who hears or plays it. It’s almost as loud as a standard guitar, including on the bass notes. I also have a Taylor GS Mini (strangely enough it’s Taylor Swift’s favorite guitar) which is halfway between a parlor and standard sized guitar. It doesn’t sound significantly better than the Taylor Baby (maybe a bit more sustain), but has one good feature: You can buy from Taylor a plug-in humbucker pickup which fits neatly beneath the strings in the hole near the neck. The fitting for it is built into the guitar. The cord plugs into the strap post at the bottom of the guitar. Easy to install, sounds great. For portability, the Taylor Baby can’t be beat. The high-quality soft case that comes with it is set up as a travel backpack, and I often carry it that way if I need to have my hands free.

                  Phil,

I agree with Sunjamr Steve. I have a Taylor Big Baby and love it. It’s 15/16 size which is basically a Parlor. Recently I purchased a Taylor Academy A10e. The Academy series is a well constructed new series they have come out with at an affordable price. The A10e is basically a Parlor size Big Baby with electronics onboard. Taylor has an Academy A10 without electronics for $499 US or the A10e with a built in tuner and electronics for $599 US. I love both of these instruments, so just thought I would throw that out there for you to consider.

Happy shopping! I’ve long been a fan of your playing and look forward to seeing a video of whatever guitar you finally choose.

                  Regards,

                  Gene
