Not exactly blues, but cool none the less. (warts and all)

Hey Warren, welcome back (pardon me if you’ve been here and I missed you, my schedule has changed somewhat).

That was cool for “not blues.” Your guitar had an amazing tone for the song, you must have put a lot of time into getting that just right. Nice work!

          The song takes me back.

          Don D.

Hi Don, thanks for the nice comments. I haven’t been recording for some time, so not active on the forum, however have been working the lessons just as hard. On Monday, I was listening to a Tim Pierce video, he was playing ‘The Rain Song’ and it inspired my to learn and record it. I really like this song so I’m going to attempt to re-do this with the help of a skilled recording tech/engineer and learn something in the process. Btw, not a terribly difficult song to learn, part of the trick is the tuning, mostly two finger chords. Love it when I can find gems like this.

              Hi Warren,
That’s still a lot of song to learn. Nice job. Where did you learn the song from and where did you get the backing track.

Thanks Duffy P and charjo for the kind comments.

John, below is a list of the pieces I chose for this recording (all in haste mind you):

                  backing track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrVtjSK9DZs
                  learning the song:
                  1. http://plus.ultimate-guitar.com/l/led_zeppelin/the_rain_song_tab_online.html#9dcf8 (A few months ago, I purchased a ‘lifetime’ subscription for pro tabs for $36 US, keep an eye out for these deals.)
                  2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UKlGa1agtU&t=169s (from https://www.shutupandplay.ca/the-rain-song–acousticelectric.html) – there are many possible choices on youtube etc., however I found this one the particularly helpful.
                  3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpE-lPRZWyc (the master himself from 1994, you get a very clear picture of what/how he’s playing it in this video).
                  4. Some of my own simplifications/expressions/goof-ups. You’d be surprised how quickly you can learn this song, as I described above to Don D, the tuning creates the special magic for it.

Btw, John, I really enjoyed your ‘The Wind Cries Mary’, very professionally done. Do you think your vocal guy could do some Robert Plant for this song :)?

This was really well done, and an impressive version of one of my favorite songs. Have to disagree on one thing though – in its structure, its a very slow blues, at least I have always thought of it that way.
