This was more of a soul-jazz tune at its start, music by trumpeter Nat Adderley (brother of alto player Cannonball Adderley) with lyrics by Oscar Brown, Jr., but in the hands of the Butterfield Blues Band with Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop, it’s all blues. It’s because of how great the BBB do it that I decided to highlight this one. Next time, to make up for this, I’ll start with a more down home blues subject.
Here’s Nat Adderley’s original, the title track from his 1960 album.
Nat Adderley (cornet), Wes Montgomery (gittar, solo starts around 1:40), Bobby Timmons (piano), Louis Hayes (drums), I don’t remember who plays the bass and cello, there are three bassists/cellists on this record, Sam Jones, Keter Betts, Percy Heath.
Here’s Oscar Brown’s vocal version from Sin and Soul …and then some later in 1960.
Here’s Cannonball Adderley’s smoking version, live on Oscar Brown’s TV show, Jazz Scene (credits listed on the YouTube video)–funny how that works.
Nina Simone live on The Merv Griffin Show, 1966.
The Butterfield Blues Band from their second album, East-West, 1966. Paul Butterfield (vocals, harmonica); Mike Bloomfield, Elvin Bishop (gittars); Mark Naftalin (piano, organ); Jerome Arnold (bass); Billy Davenport (drums). I’m pretty sure that’s Bloomfield on the first gittar solo at about :50 and Elvin Bishop comes in at around 4:10. I can’t tell you who’s who at the end when they’re kicking it around.
If you’re not familiar with the title track of East-West, check it out, here’s the full album.
It was one of those records that turned my head around when I finally heard it in 1983. It’s the last song, a beautiful two-gittar tour de force “trip around the world.”
And now, the reason we’re here, the Butterfield Blues Band live in Boston, 1966 (in 2 parts).
Robben Ford band, live in 2003.
