Hi , I’m Dan Knapp, I very recently joined. I’m looking forward to expanding my horizons Learning the art of picking around inside the chords and speeding up.
I’m liking this guitar site already. Thanks Brian for this EP 609, it’s my first attempt at one of your sessions. I’ve been playing guitar and other Instruments and music most of my life, and since I retired, I’ve been spending more time and determination to learn the art of “dancing around the Strings”. I seem to have connected with your concept regarding Pentatonic scales living within chords. I’ve heard this coined before, but never understood just what it meant. You made it easy to understand which I really appreciat e. I definitely need to do some wood shedding on the pentatonic scales up and down the neck, I’m excited to start with this project. Thanks again for a great lesson Brian.

Hi Dan, welcome to the AM family. It’s all here for you and the process is very simple if you already have the basics down. Be sure to fill out your profile when you get a chance. Just click on the My Account link and fill out the basic information about yourself and your guitars. Have fun learning new things and making new connections on the fretboard. The concept of licks and scales living inside of a chord shape is something that Brian goes over multiple times in different lessons, so it’s an important concept to eventually get. EP609 is packed with a lot of takeaways, so take your time with it.

Root note patterns >>> CAGED shapes >>> TRIAD'S. Just put in the work and watch your guitar skills soar.

Hello all, I never get tired of playing music. Most of my family are music makers like me. I started Bass Guitar back in 1972 playing with my high school stage band in North-Eastern Nevada. I’ve been playing a Martin A series focused on pop rock, country, Bluegrass, and worship. I’m mostly play songs that have already been written. I’ve taken guitar and voice lessons over the years. I’ve learned a little bit, but never really felt like I could play it comfortably, knowing how to get around up and down the neck, etc. I played a Dobro with a bluegrass group 8 years or so. My wife also plays base and some rhythm guitar. She’s learning to play the fiddle. now.. I feel like I’ve hit the jackpot with Brian and this active melody program. I’ve been longing for a way to learn all of the in depth scales inside cords, but just didn’t know how to make it happen. I feel optimistic that overtime. I will capture the information I need to know to be able to play fluently knowing exactly what I’m doing hopefully.

Welcome Daniel. Are you able to shoot a video of you playing? And do you have a DAW like GarageBand or Logic Pro? Based on your background, it sounds to me like you are at the point where you need to break free and get good a improv. The ultimate goal for most AM members is to be able to just grab a guitar and play whatever comes into their heads. I was a member for about 2 years before I felt confident enough to even attempt some improv. Now, 8 years later, I can just play anything my brain creates, and I hardly ever play songs that someone else has written.
