Dear AM friends!
Here’s my struggle! I’ve gone through a fingerstyle course this summer and I’m enjoying it but now… Travis picking chapter… I picked EP550 to show you my struggle.
Fingerstyler friends, my million dollar question to you is: is it really possible to have the thumb going its independent path? I succeed to get the pattern only if I look at the tab and figure it out as a whole hand thing. Does the brain at some point separate the thumb from the other fingers?
Thank you and enjoy the Challenge weekend!

Hi Serena,
I think you have finger style of play going. You just have to start out slow. Tap your foot to set timing and try just a steady drone thumb on the sixth string. Then try some changes to the fifth string and then back to the sixth.
I am not an expert, but I enjoy finger style best and practice is key 🗝️🎶🎵Don P

Hi Serena, you’ve got this going and it will only get easier from here. I used to do a lot of fingerstyle. I had to work it out as a whole-hand thing too. I never understood why people teach it as thumb-finger independence. That may come in time, but not for beginners. I did find the whole-hand approach worked for me and got a lot easier in time, but never did it feel like independent parts.

You did much better than I could ever do Serena. I gave up on finger style but I think you’ll do fine with a little more practice.

Keep on trying Serena, it will come to you soon.
Well I think 2 brains would help, lol.
But I have only one so I can’t play Travis picking.AndréM
