I thought your licks were pretty snappy!

For me, it’s about outlining the triads first and foremost, then inserting licks after I’ve got a handle on that. I also think it’s helpful to first craft some of your own licks in a thoughtful way, rather than pressuring yourself to pull out new licks in real time. At least at first….

Nicely done, Manfred. I agree with Alan, I don’t think any of this has to be spontaneous, ie. it takes a plan of what positions and triads to use around each chord and seeing intervals around them. It also takes an inate sense of the rhythm. It’s all part of the big journey.

Hi Manfred, it all sounded pretty good to me! I think the key to improvisation is to have a “bag of licks” that you can pull out on the spot and then mix and match them for the situation. And knowing where chord tones are around triads helps too, so if you have a I chord going to a IV, you can hit the 7th of the 1 to pull to the IV, and then make the IV diminished or minor to pull back to the I.

Hi Manfred, I think you have a great start on this. Smoothly played, in time, even with the occasional challenged lick. I think the biggest secret to getting better at it is to simply keep doing it, a lot! Have a great jam!!

That sounds great to me, Manfred! I’m appreciating the utility of this lesson now just watching you perform it. All of the licks you played fit and didn’t get boring to me at all. I think this is helped just by the somewhat unusual chord progression which helps keep things interesting. You just need to incorporate some more licks that you have handy. I bet you could take any lick from a Brian lesson you have already learned and it would fit in here somewhere. And if you kept playing around with it, you would really get good with it at adding limitless things on the fly.
