I have to be honest: it didn’t turn out exactly the way I wanted it to. It was the very first take—I wasn’t warmed up yet—and I wanted to try it at least three or four more times to find the right phrasing and make the solo “sing” the way I wanted it to. Unfortunately, my wife came in, so I had to turn off the amp and put everything away in a hurry! 😂
I know I didn’t give it my all and that there are several inaccuracies in the phrasing, but that’s just part of the deal when you’re playing at home in your spare time.
Do you ever find yourselves having to record a “first take” before you have to turn everything off? Let me know what you think, and I’d love to hear any advice on the licks!

The rhythm on this one is not easy at first for some. It takes time to get the hang of it. Just take it a few bars at a time and focus on nailing the rhythm of the lick and the exact beat that it goes from G to the A chord. You really don’t even need to play what Brian played at all. You can simply play whatever Em lick you want starting on the 2nd beat to start, but on any other beat going forward.
Every lick leads into a G to A chord or triad at a very specific timing and again, you just have to listen carefully and get used to what it sounds like. The A comes in right on the AND of beat 3. The G comes in on mainly on beat 3, but could start earlier if desired.
What I love about this particular lesson is how it relates to chord shapes. This is such a powerful tool to ultimately get good at, it’s worth doing whatever it takes to make progress seeing the various shapes all over the neck so that it becomes second nature.
Specifically in this track, there is G to A as the signature move. So finding all your G and A triads or partial tones is the task at hand. The better you are at seeing those shapes all over the guitar neck, the easier this is to improvise over and play whatever Em licks you want in between.
When I first heard this track and practiced it, I was completely oblivious to targeting the G FIRST. I was going directly for the A and it never sounded right. As soon as I targeted the G first and then A, that’s when it all clicked.
Edit: I should probably mention that I’m using G instead of Em because it’s much easier to visualize and to my ear, it sounds awesome that way. Give it a try.
