You play so well Garry that I always listen to your posts more than once.
Curious to know. How do you approach Brian’s lessons?
I always spend at least a week, getting the lesson down as perfectly as I can then I spend another week working my own ideas into it. I have a feeling you might do something similar ☺️.
I have always loved that Gresch of yours. It is the guitar you started with and it is still my favorite of all your guitars- mind you, i do have a soft spot for semi-hollows 😉

Thanks for listening and leaving a comment Geoff, always appreciated. My approach is always pretty much the same. Firstly I’ll print out a paper copy and grab a pencil and my guitar. I’ll play through many times trying to nail the notes, the rhythm and the nuances. I’m very methodical with fingering and will notate left and right hand fingering on any challenging parts. When I’m happy with this I will set the SoundSlice feature to a slow tempo and practice until I’m happy. When I can play it at the slower speed I then up the tempo each day or so until I get it at about 80%. I will then download the backing track into my DAW and again start at a slower speed then work this up to a speed I’m comfortable with. I don’t always match Brian’s original speed. Mostly because I can’t play that fast but on occasion it’s a choice. I sometimes think I can play it at a slightly slower speed and put more expression into the solo. When I know I can play it with confidence I will play around with guitar settings, amp settings and effects. As you know I live record each video. I mic my amp and don’t alter anything after it goes into my DAW unless it’s to alter the volume of the backing track. Anyway, the above is my approach. Oh wow! You actually take it to another level Garry! A very classical guitar approach to things by the way -:) No wonder you get such a great sound.
No, I am definitely “lazier” than you. I certainly do not go so far as to print out the lesson and pencil annotations in there. It is interesting because I do exactly that with my classical guitar work but not for the electric. I just use that on screen tab view Brian provides and ‘slice in and dice’ it section by section playing over the top until I get it – divide and conquer piece by piece. I also try to get the best tone right away – like you, I could save that until the end but I just prefer practicing with the best tone up front – just me.
Interesting that you mic up the amp. David Lehrman showed me how to record my track separately and then merge it back in separately using my video editing software (Da Vinci Resolve). The nice thing is I found a way to record my track separately while having the backing track on. I just find that, with this approach, I can handle the volume of my backing track and my recorded track separately so they balance better and I can pan the tracks independently.
At the end of the day, the approach doesn’t matter as long as the finished product comes out nicely -:) I just asked because I can tell that you pay a lot attention to small details and that matters.

Currently practicing this one at slow tempo. You did an incredible job playing it so well at the original fast tempo: really a flawless and great rendition, Garry!
In the comments above I can read that you put in a lot of work and practice before recording (which I presumed anyway), and it definitely paid off!Guido
