I’m real new to guitar. I was just strumming a few chords, literally. I’m working on rythm progressions, so I’m strumming some really basic demonstration music and you finish on a whole note. So at the end of the note in this book I’m studying its not real specific as to how to actually “finish”. I’m playing electric, so I tried different things like muting the strings all at the same, which no matter how softly I try it still seems rather abrupt. I also reach down and play with the volume. Tonight I just tried something a little different and it sounded really cool and was a little gentler sounding finish. I palm muted one string at a time, from the low E to the high E. A lot cleaner finish to the chord. What I was wanting to know is if there is a formal term to this method of muting. I havnt ran across one. I’m gonna try from the high E to the low E next. 🙂

Hey droildlizard, I’m not sure if there’s terminology to describe what you’re doing, but I am aware of what you’re talking about. It’s basically palm muting with the right hand and then picking out each note in the chord (rapidly) to end the strum pattern. That’s a good way to do it. A typical way to end a strum pattern would be with a downstroke and letting the chord ring out – obviously holding the chord shape with the left hand.. while the notes ring out. That will work with an electric guitar or acoustic guitar. If it continues to ring and you want to stop it… you can just mute all strings with the right hand and it will end the sound.
