Hi all,
Thought I would share my 2nd ever recording (this time following the recording guide on this forum).
This is the first piece I’ve learnt that’s faster than 100bpm, and while it’s far from perfect I’m really proud that I managed to get an ‘ok’ take.
The tone definitely needs improving (I’m getting used to my new amp and recording generally) and there are numerous mistakes, but this feels like I’m getting closer to getting over the beginner stage.

You’re definitely over the ‘beginner’ stage Ben. It’s not easy to match Brian’s speed on most lessons and you’ve not only kept to speed but you’ve done it looking in total control and without loosing the musicality of the solo. Kudos on a top performance. All the best! 😎🎸😎

And yeah I guess comparing myself to others all the time will always make me feel like a beginner as there is so much impressive content out there

That’s beyond good Ben. Your attention to detail and ability to apply what you are learning is way better than most. I’m very proud of your accomplishment to nail such an advanced lesson at speed. Getting up to that tempo and still be that musical, you are definitely very talented. You should look into finding some other players at or above your level to jam with. That would really be good for you at this point.
Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

Thanks so much for this reply. It really means a lot. Thats really given me a boost to practice even more – I just read it out loud to my fiancée as I was so happy haha
I’ve found it quite difficult to gauge my ability level as I only ever play alone, shut away in my basement. The only feedback I’ve ever really gotten is from my fiancée but she admits so quite tone deaf, so her saying my playing is nice doesn’t mean much!!
I think I’ll take your advice and see who I can link up with. I’m hoping I can find a local jam group that I can observe on a few occasions or something like that.

You’re too hard on yourself Ben. You played that extremely well and at a very fast tempo. I didn’t hear any mistakes. Very nice.

Nicely played Ben, that’s one of my favorite AM lessons. For some reason you gave it a kind of jazz vibe, which sounded really cool. I wouldn’t mess with your tone, because whatever you did, it was perfect. And BTW, that lick that mixes the major and minor pent scales has become one of the most famous examples of it. I use it often whenever I play improv, even though technically it’s not improv, since I copied it…..

Nice flowing rhythm on the licks and the whole arrangement is smooth as silk. Seems to be the perfect tempo as everything locks in nicely. Also, when a classic lesson is pulled up it encourages us to go back and revisit the original EP050. Thanks for posting. Great performance!
