        Hi Active Melody family!

It’s time for the March, 2026 Site Member Challenge!

For this month’s challenge, record a duet with yourself! Lay down a rhythm track first, then record a lead part over it. Any style, any key — totally your call!

This is a great opportunity to think about how rhythm and lead work together, and you may be surprised at how much fun it is to play along with yourself. The result is a more complete, fuller sounding piece of music that is rewarding to listen back to.

There are lots of free and easy ways to do this — your phone’s voice memo app, GarageBand, or any basic recording software will work just fine.

The submission date for this challenge will be Sunday, April 12 – you can start submitting Friday, April 10

If you need assistance with how to record yourself and post to the forum see this post

        GROUND RULES FOR PARTICIPATION:

Post your Youtube, Vimeo, or Soundcloud links of you playing your chosen lesson anytime between Friday, April 10, through Sunday, April 12, 10:00 pm CST. Please do not submit earlier. I think it is fun to see everyone’s posts at once.

Submit individually in the “Active Melody Member Challenge Response Submissions” forum. Title your posts “March 2026 Challenge Response – [Your AM Screen Name]”

Please submit only a single video or audio file for this challenge.

Have fun and don’t be intimidated by these challenges!!! Use these challenges to help you set goals and complete them by a deadline. You can also use this as an opportunity to chat with your fellow Active Melody members and share tips or tricks on this challenge that you think are useful.

It is better to show progress versus perfection with these challenges. So if you are a beginner and can only lay down a simple two-chord rhythm track, that is completely ok. The point is that you are trying something new and growing as a player. Remember we are all here to support you no matter what your current playing level is.

I look forward to seeing everyone’s posts! 🙂

That’s a great idea Brian. This will be very interesting to see what everyone comes up with as there are many paths to choose from.

Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

A fun one for my second challenge! I have been recording with an sm-57 into a zoom h6 essential. I then export the first track to my laptop and listen back on headphones while I record the second track.

For whatever reason this feels much more organic to me than recording directly into the DAW. Your mileage may vary.

              Looking forward to this.

Could you not just do the whole thing on the Zoom H6? I only have the Zoom H1 (only records one track), but I thought the Zoom H6 could record up to 6 tracks.

It might? I have a workflow that works for me. I record the rhythm track and then export to my laptop then listen to track 1 on headphones whilst recording track 2. I like to bring them into Logic to mix, add compression, etc.

Two days into this and I find out laying down a good rhythm track is not as easy as it looks. Have to count everything out and there are no audible cues. I feel like I need a drum track to lock in the groove.

Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.
