Keb Mo is one of my big favorites on the blues scene because he makes wonderful melodic music, because he enriches the blues with lots of unusual chords, and because he comes across as very modest, friendly, and relaxed.
I stumbled across his “Life is Beautiful” by chance and was immediately impressed, but also challenged by his picking, with which he conjures up wonderfully varied accompaniment without much effort.
Because the song sounds in D with a capo on the 2nd fret, it fits quite well into this challenge, even though it is actually
based on C in terms of fingering.Despite intensive practice, I was unable to achieve the original tempo. At a higher tempo, it just didn’t sound as confident to me. I downloaded the vocals from the internet.
Have fun with it.

A beautiful song, brilliantly played Dieter! Your finger picking is spotless and sounds great, very articulated, with great timing and every note stand out very clearly. Sometimes it’s better to play a bit slower than fast, playing beautifully as you did!

You finger pickers always astonish me, and that goes double when you can sing over it. In this case the best part is the feeling you put into the vocal, I don’t think the pace is a problem at all. In fact, it seems like it complements the vocal expression and mood, Beautifully performed.

That was some mighty fine finger picking Dieter. You did a really good job on this. I like to hear some Keb Mo in the morning.

Nice finger picking, Dieter. That style of playing is tricky but oh so satisfying. Great song with your accompaniment.

Excellent playing, Dieter!
Your fingerpicking skills are strong – especially with the thumb pick which, to me, always feel like a foreign object. Your mention of having downloaded the vocals from the internet just made me realize that playing with a “singer” is a good exercise! For some reason I never thought of doing that before, I might give it a try now.🎸JoLa

One time we drove from Charlotte, NC to Florida, mostly on off routes (not the interstate) and just let Ken Mo stream the whole time. Quite a nice drive with that soundtrack. Got to see Keb Mo a couple years back too.
Mighty fine finger picking to this lovely song! -

I’m a big fan of Keb too and for just the same reasons you mention. You reminded me too what a beautiful song this is and your performance of it was equally brought out all of that beauty. Fantastic!

That’s one way to play in the key of D. I nearly tuned my guitar down to D standard for another idea I had.
Sounded beautiful, Dieter. Nice fingerpicking, nice song.

Terrific submission Dieter. Impressive finger picking and a great idea to include KM too. You’ve inspired me to have a closer look at his work – I’ve never really got into it before. Your video with the Picture in Picture was very effective.

Your acoustic sounds so warm and natural, as though I’m in the same room as you! I agree, I prefer blues with some unusual chords and surprises, I shall check out Keb Mo. And that tempo sounds just just right to me, a very enjoyable piece.

What a nice and positive song. Thanks, Denise. Yes, it takes a little practice to get used to the thumb pick, but it really helps you play more punchy bass lines. They come in different styles—shorter, longer, angled, and so on—so you’ll have to experiment a bit. Because my fingernails are brittle, I sometimes use metal fingerpicks addditional. But that’s a whole other story.

Oh Deiter-this is great! Your use of fingerpicks accentuates your bass notes and it ain’t easy. I love this. Job well done. You have a wide palate for different styles. Just plain ole good taste you have. Great submission.

Thanks, John. I got into music in the 1960s, and back then there was a “musical explosion” with a coexistence of so many different styles—something that’s never been seen since. My biggest role models are still the Beatles, who practically crossed, expanded, or redefined musical boundaries with every new song. And I had a guitar teacher who had studied classical music and played in various rock and pop bands.
