My challenge #99 😃
It’s been a busy work season for me and whatever time I had left for practice I just (barely!) managed to learn the two related microlessons, ML131 and ML129.
It does feel like playing my own stuff might have been easier but when I try to copy Brian I tend to focus more on the technique (I need that) and always learn something new. The progress was tedious at first but once I memorized them, it became more fun.
I also spent quite a bit of time and effort on the technicalities of recording with my Fender Pro Jr amp which is simply too loud for my little room so I ended up getting an attenuator. The biggest advantage of that is that I can now drive the amp more (I didn’t here) and lower the volume but also – the attenuator has a line out so I can record without a mic. However; in this recording I used both direct line and a (condenser) mic. The dynamic Shure SM57 microphone is too weak for this without a booster. Still trying to figure out the most efficient way to record with my little but loud tube amp without pedals.
And oh yeah, a few months ago I traded my Fender Duo Sonic for this 2018 Fender Deluxe Nashville Telecaster and had it modded to engage neck PU in any position (Gilmour mod). So far I like it. My butterscotch Squier tele is also gone so now I have only 3 electric guitars. I’m getting better! 😁🎸

Nicely played Jola. Nice Tele too. Even though they’re microlessons there’s still a lot to learn on these pieces, but you cracked it. I’m already looking forward to Number 100 – that’s really something.

Wow, one more challenge for 100. That’s incredible in and of itself. That peek into your paper notes for the challenge in the intro was a really nice touch. Your composition turned out really well.
Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

Sounded good on the new to you Tele JoLa. That mod sounds really cool, I rather like the neck pickup on a Tele (see my submission for more).
Interesting that little amp gets so loud, I’ve played the at guitar stores before and rather liked the lower volume sound, but I guess if you are looking for dirt… -

Hi Jola, you handled these lessons well. Great bluesy tone and phrasing, and smooth playing. I can relate to the time crunch, and sometimes the creativity just has to take a backseat to getting it done. Sounds great as always, and glad to see you. Congrats on the new Tele.

You took the same approach as I did, JoLa – at least on your first run-thru. Really nice playing and loved the tone dialled in too 👍🎶😎

Very nice rendition JoLa, certainly you got those lessons down. Great tone from the guitar and amp. Congrats on #99 challenge response (I am only about a 1/3rd of yours)!

The new Tele-Amp-Connection has a nice, mellow sound, JoLa. Looking forward to hear it cranked up. 😎
In the short time you had, you did very well to learn both micro lessons – I only managed one. Well done!
To play something well, I always have to memorise the notes. I simply cannot play on time and precise while looking at the tabs. (Okay, I hardly manage that when I do memorise the notes 😏).
Looking to forward to your challenge response #100. there should be a special challenge from Brian to celebrate that fantastic achievement!Bluesige Grüße

You played these two lessons very well and so bluesy. Haha you shifted ML129 into G, very convenient.
Love these two last chords.
Very nice sound from your new Tele.
I am glad you are satisfied with your Attenuator. I might get one, too.
Bravo for your 99th challenge!

It was a special pleasure to hear your versions of ML 129 and 131, Jola, as I also played large parts of them in my challenge entry.
Ah, you also shifted ML129 to G. I especially love your soft and mellow version of these micro lessons.
I always find it fascinating how differently everyone interprets the lessons, and your version is awesome.Take the chance to meet your AM friends on Zoom.
The next Meetup will take place in March/AprilThere will be a detailed announcement here in the forum a few weeks before.
I look forward to meet you.

Hi JoLa, we did the same thing, but I only did the C shape.
You played both very well.
I learned the C shape in E and the transposition in G drove me cray that’s why I am late to the party.AndréM

Nice work with the two lessons, played at a nice steady tempo , sometimes it’s just as rewarding to learn the material rather than create your own composition, and there’s always a takeaway from each one .
Congrats on your new tele , i have the same and have also had the mod done , lots of variety of tones to choose from .
Glad you got your amp to a more usable volume , as for recording I use a pair of sm57s both with fethead mic boosters but even with that set up the volume needs tweaking slightly in the DAW .
Congratulations on 99 challenge posts a great achievement.Martin

You’ve played both excellently JoLa on this 99th submission, wow! and also inspired me to focus on technique and clean sound, thank you!
If I wasn't making mistakes I wouldn't be the kind of player I want to be. Perfection is dangerous.

Glad you made the time to participate in the challenge and nice work on the 2 lessons.
That is one swiss army knife of a tele, a friend of mine has the Nashville tele and loves it. I like that mod also.
Don’t sell any more guitars, Jola, i’m starting to feel a twang of guilt😒.

Jola, that was very nicely played! Great looking and sounding Tele. I have an SM57 but have never mic’d my amp. I always record using my HX Stomp and it works out ok.

As the saying goes JoLa, ‘If you want a job done properly, give it to a busy person’ Given your time constraints, you played those lessons beautifully and the new Tele looked and sounded great.
Regards your recording, I remember a few years ago using an SM 57 without a booster but almost touching the amp speaker- cover to good effect and without raising the roof too much.Richard

Really nice! It was not apparent that you had to work quickly on learning Brian’s licks. (I think that’s harder, frankly, because when you invent a piece you naturally use licks that are already built into your muscle memory.) Your playing was clean and very intentional and the hybrid picking was smooth.
The technical issues were not apparent, either, though I understand the occasional need for an attenuator. My son needed one on his Marshall monster amp that was capable of rattling the pans in his kitchen.
(When I was in college, I played with a rock band through a Fender Bandmaster 60-watt? tube amp and a smaller Gibson amp for a total of three 12-inch speakers. It was plenty of wattage to cause both hearing damage and for my bell-bottom pants to flap in the concussion in front of the speakers. I now do like Andre and play through a Spark 40 that has an audio interface with my laptop DAW. What I lack in authentic miked sound I make up for in convenience and variety of tones. ) I think my acoustics sound best miked rather than with a pickup, but that’s another issue.
Sorry for the delay getting to this. I am just getting back to a normal sleep pattern from the bluegrass weekend.
