EP444 DEC 2025 LESSON USING A “QUIST” JAM TRACK
My deep dive after submitting for the December Challenge
First off EP444 is in the key of Bm so what are the notes in the Bm scale: B C# D E F# G A
Now what are the chords in the Bm scale: Bm Cdim D Em F#7 G A
Now what are the chords use in this EP444: Bm Em F#7 and Gmaj7
(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((
One of my goals on this was to be able to play EP444 in basically 3 places or more on the neck so I wanted to zero in on finding and playing the F#7 and Gmaj7 chords in those 3 places.
(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((
Understanding the notes in F#7 and Gmaj7: F#7= F# A# C# E & Gmaj7= G B D F#
Then I discovered something interesting: (Not really to do with EP444 but still, so insightful)…if you don’t play the F# note in the F#7 chord, your playing an A# diminished chord A# C# E Cool
And if you don’t play the G in the Gmaj7 chord your playing a Bm chord B D F#. Cool again
Just something to put under your hat!
This really becomes clear if you know your major, minor and diminished triad shapes on 1st and 2nd set of strings. I’ll put them up in an attachment.First things first……..learn ep444 as Brian teaches it

I started to dive deeper into each of Brian’s lessons as well just to open up the whole fretboard and know where all the goodies are. At first it leads to over playing, but then just dial it back and use your ear to make it work in a melodic way.
I really liked what you did with this lesson and I see the benefit of going deeper. I now hand write these notes to further lock it in as Brian suggested in that first video of the new year.
Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

Your so right Michael,
once you know the material, slow it all down and think melodically because less is more, almost always.
especially when your thinking melodically.ALL IT TAKES TO WRITE A SONG IS........3 CHORDS AND THE TRUTH!

Paddy,
You discovered the concept of stacking triads. Starting certain triads on the 3rd or 5th of your chord implies the chord without the root but with extensions. It can be an interesting way to imply extended chords without the root or to add a different voice as a second guitar part. Using the same concept with arpeggios it can be an interesting way to make chord appropriate licks with extensions.

thanks John,
and those triads in all positions and inversions on the 1st and 2nd set of strings are like opening up a gold mine for lead lines as well.
