A $5k PRS was the clear loser in this test and it dispelled the hype of amazing tone woods etc being superior.
The test was between a $5k PRS McCarty Ten Top, a PRS SE built by Cort in Indonesia and a $270 Harley Benton
The people judging the results were popular hosts of YT channels and some industry people
My condolences to Paul Reed Smith, his expensive guitar didn’t prove to be superior. -

The hype about tonewood reminds me of a fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen called “The Emperor’s New Clothes”. Everyone was conned into believing the Emperor was wearing a fine new set of clothes as he rode through the streets of the city, but finally a little kid blurted out “Hey, the Emperor is naked!”

Good analogy Steve
If a person wants a guitar from a custom shop and can afford it, go for it – more power to them. But when the sound comes out of the speakers, most listeners won’t be able to tell the difference
My favorite Brit player, Alvin Lee, used a late 50’s ES-335, affectionately named Big Red. Being concerned with the possibility of theft, Alvin placed Red in his vault and began using signature models of Red made by Tokai – no difference his sound.
Alvin didn’t use effects, guitar straight into the amp and his sound was controlled with his volume and tone controls. A well made 335 copy with good pickups gave Alvin everything he neededIn this video at the 13:50 mark, Rhett Shull, is amazed how a current model Epiphone Les Paul 1960 Standard compares to a ’60 Les Paul…

Love it Keith. Sea monkeys or Mahogany, It doesn’t matter. Take any average guitar, give it a great setup and you are in business my friend.

And don’t forget Jim Lill, who has done a lot of testing to learn the truth about where tone comes from:
