I am new at this, and I’m trying to figure out some things. For example, if I am playing A shape C chord, what pentatonic scale can I play over it? If we have the song in a key of A and we are using the D shape triad for the A chord. What pentatonic scale do we play over this? Is it the fifth C Pentatonic, which is a D pentatonic scale?
In short, if we are playing in A shape, C cord, do we use the second C shape pentatonic scale? -
Hi Angelo, Each shape has a corresponding pattern, which is one way to look at it. But also when playing ie an A chord (D Shape) you could also be in the Key of D or Key of E as the A Major chord is in those keys too. Brian has got a good series on CAGED for each shape with lessons ep 556, ep557, ep558, ep559 and ep560.
Attached is a PDF for matching the 5 shapes to the corresponding pentatonic scales which will help. If there is something else you are not sure on there are many here that can help you further.
