I’m guessing a lot of people in the Northern Hemisphere have never even heard of the Glastonbury music festival. To give you an update, it is the largest outdoor music festival in the world. It’s been around since the 1970s, probably getting inspiration from Woodstock. Every year the festival features a mix of classic rock legends and new musicians. Sadly, there is some rap and hip hop, but not too much, as not that many people are into it any more. Glastonbury is also a time for showing off the latest outrageous fashions, almost kind of a contest to see who can come up with the most innovative or shocking costumes. I really only care about the music, and since the BBC is the main sponsor, they post good quality music videos of most of the acts. You can just go to Youtube and do a search for BBC Music, then click on the “Videos” tab and behold! There are countless videos to choose from. It’s a good way to waste an evening or two.

I watched quite a bit of Glastonbury over last weekend and my personal opinion was of being ‘underwhelmed’ I didn’t witness too many fresh and creative bands with something new to say.
While not a huge fan of Rod Stewart, his performance with the supporting artists he brought with him were head and shoulders above an otherwise mundane artist line-up.
I felt Nile Rodgers and Chic also put in a good performance.
Maybe I’m just getting older ………Richard

The Glastonbury music festival does ring a bell, but I wasn’t aware that it’s the largest in the world. Interesting. I’m not the biggest fan of such large events, I prefer smaller venues. Less hype and you are closer to the artists. But thanks for pointing out Steve, I will have a look.

Hi Steve, yep I’ve heard of the Glastonbury festival the site is about nine miles from my doorstep ! And can hear it in our back garden.
And yes it’s absolutely huge with loads going on with lots of different stages and music for all tastes, unfortunately the TV only seems to show the big stages and not the up and coming bands on the smaller stages ,there is a total of about 100 stages /venues in the whole festival which shows how big it is , I agree with Richard’s comment about the line up , but like I said there’s so much they don’t show
Like singer songwriter/ acoustic sets / blues bands etc
Personally I have been to it a few years back but it’s just to many people for my liking . But that’s not taking anything away from the festival it’s literally a pop up city and takes months to prepare including putting up the 8 mile long perimeter fence to keep out people trying to get in without paying!
Next year there is no festival they are having a break until 2027 .Martin

I saw an interview with the property owners – a farming couple – and they said they are buying some adjacent land this year to increase the size of the venue. It will take them a year to get the new stages and performance areas built, so they had to take a year off to do the work. But the sheer size of the event is already mind-boggling. I am impressed to learn that this event has the lowest amount of crime of any rock festival. It’s just a huge crowd of decent fun-loving people having a good time. For me personally, I would never want to go to any large music festival now days. When I was in my 20s, it was a lot of fun. It was a chance to check out my peer group and see what they were looking like, what kind of fashions were happening, what kind of music was happening. Maybe even a chance to meet some potential new friends.

I usually watch a bit of Glasto on the BBC every year but missed it this year as I’ve been in the USA for the last month. I did check out the line up for 2025 and it seems that “acts with a session band” are becoming more predominant than bands but I guess that’s just a reflection on the current state of popular music and Glastonbury is just giving people what they want.
I’ve never actually been. I’ve been tempted but every year find I’ve missed the ticket sale!
When it comes to the event I’m usually happy to be watching from home on the TV. Getting a spot near the stage for a big name takes serious dedication and a strong bladder!
At home there’s beer in the fridge a few steps away and I don’t need to share the lavatory with 100000 other people😅 -

I was at the second one in 1971. I erected a geodesic dome cut out of washing m/c cardboard boxes, dowels & neoprene tubing etc, as we campers who were Bucky Fuller/Whole Earth Catalog fans were liable to do back then. Try not to laugh.
I helped out with whole foods distribution with friends who traveled up from Infinity Foods in Brighton, where I lived at the time.
Hawkwind were the headliners, not my scene at all, I thought they were speed freaks.
Fairport Convention were there apparently but I don’t remember them playing.
Traffic, Melanie, Bowie & Quintessence also played, I don’t recall their sets either. I must have been too busy dishing out brown rice & veggies, miso and beans in the food tent.
