This Month’s Challenge is about ‘light bulb’ moments, well there’s been a few for me over the years so I did have a few options. I picked this example because it’s all about combining what is a simple melody together with a thumb backing.
The ‘light bulb’ moment for me was how two independant and basically separate ‘simple sequences’ (melody & bass) when syncopated and played together takes on a totally different feel and is often transformed into a more accomplished arrangement.
At the time this breakthrough was certainly a Eureka moment and since that time I’ve been rewarded many times over when playing fingerstyle guitar.
I chose Queen Bee by Taj Mahal as it seemed a good example of a simple but haunting melody. I have recorded this quite a few years ago but hopefully this one is an improvement.

I’m hypnotized just watching your right hand, Richard. The left one’s not bad either. Makes me want to pick up my acoustic guitar, so you know it must be inspiring😉.

Wow, great picking Richard. I’m always in awe of great Fingerstyle playing, as you say it makes for a sophisticated arrangement of a simple “hummable” melody. This could go on and on…

This is a tough technique for me, but you make it look effortless. Bravo. Love that piece.

Lovely rendition, Richard. That little hesitation with the percussive slap is a cool technique to add to your excellent finger style playing. 🎶 “ Oh she love me to my soul” 🎶 😀 Can’t help but sing along.

Hi Richard, just lovely fingerstyle playing, as always. The right-hand boom-chick bass and accompanying melody just sing through. Such great balance and coordination. I enjoyed it very much!

I was transfixed by your right thumb. It seems to know what to do on its own (which is of course not so) while you play the melody. I have no clue how to train my brain to do that.
Meanwhile, the music was great. I could listen to it all afternoon,

Mesmerizing! That’s all I have to say Richard. Well that and it was a delight to hear you play some Taj Mahal.

That’s one of my favorites, Richard, and you played it perfectly. One of the first lessons I learned after joining AM was EP065, and after getting it into my muscle memory, I decided it would be a good idea to try to add in a bass line. It worked pretty well, and since then, I often add in my own bass line to Brian’s lessons.
And, as a matter of interest, I recently watched this tutorial by Eric Bibb on developing an alternating thumb bass line:

Ahh, just marvelous, Richard!
Love that syncopated thumb technique and you do it so well!
This song does not look easy to learn, I was totally mesmerized by your performance.

That’s your signature playing Richard, you make it look effortless and work it like clockwork. Such a pleasure to watch and listen to you play this beautiful and catchy tune. The sound of your playing is so crisp.

Yes, Richard, you demonstrate this style of playing so perfectly. I listened raptly.
To have this lightbulb is one thing, but to play it as good as you do, is a thing of years of practicing.
I’m working on it!Take the chance to meet your AM friends on Zoom
The next Meetup will probably take place in July/August 2025There will be a detailed announcement here in the forum in good time.
I look forward to meet you.

Classy tune Richard , you’ve honed this to perfection, love the way you stop and hold that beat you are in total command throughout.
I’ve always said to myself if you can make one guitar sound like two thats when the magic happens , it’s a great technique to develop that syncopation . Your bass thumb just knows what to do !Martin

What a lovely tune. And, you perform it wonderfully. You separate melody and bass masterfully. Such upbeat and percussive and melodic application of fingerpicking! Makes me wanna grab my acoustic and start fingerpicking.John

what a nice submission Richard, you’ve chosen an important part of fingerstyle technique that you’ve integrated so well in your playing!
If I wasn't making mistakes I wouldn't be the kind of player I want to be. Perfection is dangerous.

Spot on Richard!! Sounds incredible!!! Tommy Emmanuel called and wants you to join him on his next tour! Pro playing here. I remember the one month abut three years ago: I put down my electric guitar and my pick. Learnt me some Deep River Blues and was impressed – like you said – the two different lines traveling the same road to musicality! Great sub here my friend!
