Greetings AMers,
Here’s a shameless repost from 2 years ago. Still need to pick up the tempo a little bit on this one but speed has always been my Achille’s heel.
I’ve been checking out some of my favourite acoustic songs of late and many of them seem to be by Ian Anderson. I love his acoustic technique and sound. Others favourites include “From the Beginning” by ELP and “The Rain Song” by Led Zeppelin.
Hopefully, I’ll get to posting some of those over the summer. This post is to give me some added motivation for the technical challenges. Hope you enjoy.

This is fantastic John. Impressed that you can play this so well. Ian Anderson’s rhythm guitar style is NOT easy to play by any means.
Jethro Tull has always been a favorite band of mine because they were able to incorporate full Orchestras in albums like Heavy Horses. Ian Anderson seemed to underrate himself as a guitarist and went for the flute instead. I still think his rhythm style was among the most interesting and unusual I had ever heard.

Hi John, absolutely nothing wrong with a repost, especially when you’re using it to motivate yourself. I really loved your acoustic piece and it’s awesome that you’re diving into Ian Anderson’s stuff – he’s a master. Can’t wait to hear what you come up with next. Keep at it and enjoy the journey!

Terrific, as always, John. Very smooth, soothing and flowing. I like the slightly melancholy vibe. Like you, I am an Ian Anderson fan. His lead guitarist in Jethro Tull – Martin Barre – is awesome.

Smooth and steady rhythm for sure John! I can’t wait to hear you takes on ELP and LZ.

Steady as a rock John and smooth transition from chordal play to connecting fills and visa versa. Great to hear you on acoustic and look forward to more. All the best! 😎🎸😎

Thanks, Andre. It’s a Taylor 816 from about 2016 when acoustics were priced more affordably.
I think the newer Taylors have a different bracing system and are a little warmer but with the electronics you can adjust. I used the direct electronic input and a condenser mic combined here, one in each channel.

I didn’t know the song, so I listened to the original by Jethro Tull. Your cover version is very close to the original, especially the technically demanding fast runs in between. A great performance.

Thanks, Dieter. I believe all the notes are right but he plays a little faster and with an incredible vocal.

A very enjoyable acoustic piece John, with that amount of style I think you should put those Strats away for a while and break out the acoustics.

Well, we have very similar tastes John, because Jethro Tull and ELP (the latter especially thanks to the songs compesed and sung by the great Greg Lake) have been always among my favourite bands.
Yes, your version is slower than the original, but flawless, very well played and now you can bring it up to regular tempo easily, I think.
Ian Anderson is a complete multi instrumental artist, singer, songwriter and genius.Guido

Great song, John. I’m always impressed with your precise picking and the Taylor sounds great. Good to hear you playing the acoustic.
Ian had a home in Palm Beach. I was never there but some of the guys I worked with mentioned what a “good chap” he was. I played Aqualung over and over again on my Dads stereo in the living room.James
