It took me about a week to decide on a limitation and the more I thought about it the more fuzzy the term „limitation” became … In the end I decided to do something standalone on acoustic, maybe with only open strings … ? 🤔

And then I remembered a partial capo I once bought but never tried. When placed on the 2nd fret, the partial capo instantly mimics DADGAD tuning but in E. The interesting part is that while the open strings make a Esus4 chord, it is still standard tuning for any fretted notes. So I could play all the open strings with alternate bass and still feel familiar with the fretboard! This composition I came up with is the result of my noodling with a suspended chord and so I guess that was my limitation choice 🤓

I really love the sound of drone notes on open strings, especially on my ……..NEW……. Maton Mini in a limited ghost black finish !!!!! Totally unexpected purchase but oh man, what a treat! The sound coming from this little thing is truly hypnotic to me, I’m sure all solid wood and the .013/.56 strings have something to do with that 😵‍💫😍

Jola, you never cease to amaze me. Half a capo for DADGAD – I wouldn’t know what to do with that, but obviously you did. Your song sounds great, very atmospheric.

Also, congratulations on your NGD! Funny, just yesterday I had a video suggestion on YouTube were a guitarist praised his Mini Maton! It sounded great. Does yours still have standard tuning?

Yes, it is in standard tuning, i.e. EADGBE

I love the DADGAD tuning and liked your hypnotique and atmospheric composition. I didn’t know this partial capo, so it’s a nice discovery! Your new Mini Maton sounds and looks great: congratulations on your purchase (a little bit of envy 😂) !

Nice fingerpicking on that great sounding guitar, JoLa. I wasn’t aware of the half capo trick either. That’s a neat trick.

I am sure once you got this figured out, you had some fun with it. It really sounds mesmerizing. Your licks resonate prolifically…. it all carries so nicely. This is forever notched in my psyche. You pass the audition. Your acoustic has a unique and powerful tone. 😎

Lot of mid range in that sound. I was hoping you were going to play a full chord to hear what it sounded like, and there it was right at the end. Nice job on utilizing your partial capo.

Hi Jola, that tuning really resonates and has such an uplifting feel. You pulled a lot out of that little guitar. Some very creative ideas… and I think I’m hearing a line from Aerosmith in there… maybe it’s just me…. Dreaming On….
I enjoyed this one a lot!

I never heard of a partial capo before, but you have certainly demonstrated its potential.

The most incredible part of this piece, I have to say, is your finger picking. In combination with the unusual tuning pattern, it makes the rest of this piece doable and magical.

I had a Taylor GS mini for a while that used 13s — owing largely to the shorter neck. I don’t think it produced bass tones like yours though..

Great sound and fascinating idea about a partial capo. Nicely done. I think if I ever go down to just 1 guitar it’ll be a nice acoustic mini.

Fantastic, Jola. Thanks for introducing this totally new concept to me. I didn’t understand how it was DADGAD until I saw the open low E is not clamped.
I see that you can use it in conjunction with a full capo and even alter the position of the partial capo to 4 frets for different tuning options.

It’s not often that something new comes along as a complete surprise to (most of)us. The capo combined with your splendid new guitar opened a new dimension, I think. Your composition was quite mesmeric (as pieces with drones frequently are) and your composition was well constructed and maintained interest all the way through – it was quite something to be developed from a noodle.

Your new Maton does indeed sound great, but with 0.13 strings, I would have to do some finger strengthening exercises to be able to press them down. Or just tune them to Open E and use a slide…..

Very exotic sounding and very musical JoLa. I played a little bit with DADGAD when I was into acoustic fingerstyle. Very intriguing tuning that make me re-think all of the usual fingerings that I used. A friend of mine had the DADGAD capo, and a few other partial capos that we would mess around with and it was fun to play around and find new sounds and chords. You can get so much music from just a finger or two.

Great choice for your “limitation”. You came up with a very nice and interesting composition. The Maton sounds great and looks great too.
