Mexican Strats are great playing / sounding guitars. In fact, if you weren’t told, you’d have a hard time distinguishing between the two. The big difference is in re-sale value. Mexican Strats go down in value while US Strats go up in value. They both play / sound the same.

like Brian I like them and the are a best buy for sure. I have an understanding that the parts…the hardware etc is different in terms of quality. I am not sure. I think if that were true and an issue, Brian would have mentioned it. He’s the dude…..

I too have to agree with this. After a 35 yr absence from guitar playing, I’m giving it one last fling. Bought a Fender Sonoran electric acoustical, and one week later had to get me a strat MIM. A beautiful metallic red. I was actually thinking about a white one or a natural, but the g-daughter convinced me this was the one. Incredible sounding guitar. I’m trying to convince myself I really don’t need a telecaster, but time will tell if I end up buying one of those also.

So glad I found Brians’ videos on You Tube, I think there’s still hope for my guitar playing now.

I’m lucky enough to have a ’95 USA Candy apple red Strat.
That’s the good news – sadly, I don’t own it. It’s on permanent loan. The owner injured his hand in a gardening accident, and can no longer play. I’ve offered many, many times to buy it from him, but he refuses to sell.
OK, great for me because I love the guitar, but one day…. he’s going to ask for it back, and I’m going to be hurting so-o-o bad.
If (when) that day comes, I’ll have a good look at the Mex Strats, but it’ll be a hard act to follow.

                  Pete.

Well the Telecaster idea is gone. Got swept away when I found a great looking Lite Ash Strat on e-bay. Just had to get it since I mentioned earlier of my desire to get a natural one. Not only like the way it looks, but sounds great also. Just a bit different than the other one.

Thomas – I love the Lite Ash Strat – what did you have to pay for it? (if you don’t mind my asking)

                        Hi Brian,
It’s a 2004 model with a few small cracks on the finish not in the wood in the neck area. I’ve heard that Fender had a few problems like this on some of their Strats. The price was $325 and the guy threw in a slightly used hard shell case for $25. The rest of the guitar is flawless including the fret board. I had him throw in the case so he could ship it inside the case along with whatever else he used to pack it with. All in all I’m really happy with it. Thanks for asking.
                        Thomas

That’s not a bad deal at all – looks beautiful – surely that’s not $325 for a US Strat?

                            No it’s a MIM. I guess I should have mentioned that. 🙁

I’m sure for a little bit more I could probably have gotten a Strat that was completely flawless, some other color , but this one had my name written
all over it. 🙂 Especially after I bought it the seller said there were 35 others that were watching it. It wasn’t an auction, but a Buy It Now deal.

                              $325???? what a bargain!

Were you wearing a mask? You can’t go wrong at that price. Happy playing!

Yeah the first thing that grabbed my eye was the shine of the ash wood, and the second was the white pick guard. They both work together to compliment each other and therefore make a great looking guitar.

Enjoy your time together with your candy apple red Strat, Who knows he may never ask for it back. My first Strat back in 1967 was a candy apple red one. 🙂

Oh heck, I was afraid someone would ask me that. 🙁

Actually it was probably a 66 since I bought it used in 67, and let me tell you, if I’d saved some of things I had back then I’d be rich today for sure. Sad to say no I don’t own it anymore. I in fact sold it in 69 as I was pretty much convinced back then that my electric guitar playing days were over. Paid $350 back then for it and sold to a friend for probably a little less. Ended up buying a Fender Palomino acoustic which I held onto for a couple of years and decided to give up guitar playing in place of raising a family and other interests.

I often think of that guitar and oh how I wish….. 🙁

This is the only pic I have of her. The color looks maroon because of the lighting and because it was made on a Poloroid cam,( the old days version of instant pics), but believe me it was as red as it gets.

That’s a Silvertone amp behind it, a poor mans version of a Fender stackable amp set.

Don’t dwell on it Thomas! who knows what will be collectable in the future?
In my time I’ve owned some very nice axes – including a very early Black Strat (I bought for £50 – about $75 from a rich kid who couldn’t care less). Sadly, I sold it a few years later to buy a brand new SG. Considering I bought the Strat in 1965 when it was already well used, it must have been early 60’s, or even late 50’s!!!
I also let a nice Gibson J45 go for next to nothing and a beautiful Haegstrom Semi was later considered to be something worth keeping. I’ve had three Tele’s – only one was brand new, and a lovely Levin got smashed by a jealous ex-boyfriend of a girl I used to be ‘friendly’ with.
There’s been a steady stream of good amps AC30’s, Marshalls, Fenders, and a very loud Laney stack.

It’s a case of ‘If I knew then what I know now’ I’d be filthy rich, but I guess we all let something precious get away from us from time to time. In the meantime, just enjoy your new Strat – who knows what it might be worth some day…!

Curios if the Fender Squier MIM up until 1999 would be a good choice. At the time they retailed for around $399. I have a chance to purchase one in Artic White. Any idea what one should pay for one today in excellent condition with a hard case?

$399 seems high for a Squier? For not much more than that you can get a Fender Strat Made in Mexico. I’d probably spring for the extra hundred and go with a Strat.

Hey Brian~ thanks for the reply. The $399 was supposedly the msrp back in 1999. The guy is asking $180 for it and the hard shell case. I’m kind of wondering if the new China made Squeirs are just as good if not better than the MIM versions. Guitar center has the Squeir Affinity strat (China made) for $179 new. I have been listening to some demo playing of the ones from China on YouTube and they sound really great. Once again thank you! You have a great site here and your video lessons in YouTube are excellent!
