This was a tough one for me as I never really memorized any licks – which now I realized I should have! If I noodle or improvise (not often enough) I usually think of melody and maybe copy parts I learned from Brian. Long story short, I quickly put together a two chord vamp style backing track and then had to decide what licks to play over it – and then I had to learn them all from scratch. I didn’t want to play them verbatim and it all sounded weird to me and by the end of the third week I wanted to toss it and call it quits this month. But then I thought of it as an exercise, not a song or a composition, so I let it be. However, as a result of this exercise, I have decided to learn and memorize more “licks”, I feel like I should have started that long time ago….
The Winter holidays are always a busy time work-wise for me but will try to catch up watching all the subs this weekend 🙂

I thought that sounded beautiful Jola well worth sticking with it! It’s comforting to know that even you have moments where you lack confidence but it certainly didn’t show. There were loads of licks in there all played beautifully.

A fabulous selection of licks JoLa, you must a spent quite a while researching those. Notwithstanding you remembered them all and then played them with a real atmospheric feel.

That was really nice! Beautiful melodies from the heart. I believe some of those nuggets I’ve heard elsewhere, “classic licks” if you will. So you are certainly absorbing the vocabulary!

I think licks are what you decide they are… and certainly they have to work with the music.
This “exercise” as you call it was terrific, haunting, hypnotic and beautiful.
Also, licks or riffs are a means to an end, not the goal; so as far as I can tell your playing has always been stylish and thoughtful and moving. So I don’t think you should worry about your catalog of licks. You will find them when/if you need them.

A really terrific selection of licks, played to perfection in a truly atmospheric piece. Excellent music, it was so absorbing, I kept wondering what was coming next.

Jola, another really well thought out submission that was well played. I think you should get tripple credit for this assignment:) I did not count the number of lics that you included but I’m just guessing there was atleast nine. Well done! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Pap

The first slide was already very effective. I loved these Gilmour and Peter Green licks. Great bends and tremolos.
Isn’t it nice to have a bunch of licks😃.
The result and number🤗 of licks is fantastic😊.
Hazel wanted to congratulate you at the end…well ok she also wanted a bit of attention. Super sweet she is.
Have a wonderful Christmas with your family.
DenisePS: thanks for your super nice comment on my submission. It is all Brian…
More Blues!

Jola, I’m so glad you did not toss it in. I actually saw your video a few days ago on the YouTube feed. I was impressed with all the licks learnt from different (iconic) sources and to sustain them for that duration with your own and at a high standard. (I remember you stated last time we had a lick challenge you were going to learn and memorise more licks 😀) Anyway, you have been busy to get this down pat in a short time frame. Congrats.

This is very good Jola & I’m glad you stayed with it. I like the way it’s ‘reflective’ , not over worked. There’s a real sense of mode & modal playing to my ear. Great tone too. The little repeat elements (sometimes played in a different octave) are a lesson in them selves. Well played.

Now it is my time to be surprised- you researched and learned all those licks and then you “wanted to toss it” 😟
WTF – that was brilliant! And sounded as if all of these licks had that same backing track in mind when they were created.
I really enjoyed that, so glad you came to your senses in time 😊👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I especially liked the Californication lick. 👏🏽👋🏽Bluesige Grüße

JoLa
This is MASTERCLASS
I think you invented a ‘better’ way to present licks
“Dude you can freakin’play”🎸😎What an entertaining and resourceful compilation of licks… by the way, phrases are licks. There are no length limits to what a lick can be so maybe you have more stored in your bank than you know
This is really inspiring-thank you for your creativity and resourceful ness!Seriously!!!

I‘m thrilled how you worked so many different musical sources into one unique piece of music, Jola. And yet you put your personal stamp on everything.
You seem to have mastered this musical skill of processing different influences into a whole of your own. Very inspiring and so joyful to listen to!Take the chance to meet your AM friends on Zoom
The next Meetup is expected to take place in November 2025There will be a detailed announcement here in the forum in good time.
I look forward to meet you.

Well jola , glad you made it and didn’t toss this to one side , you’re really playing in the moment with this one , and compliment the backing track so well , that passage at 2.52 stands out .
An excellent listen and chilled vibe .Martin

You’ve mined a rich seam of licks there. Every one that came up I was thinking “of yes!”
That’s one of my favourites too 😀! I shared your pain on this challenge. I just struggle to remember more than a handful and worst still, it seems it’s a one in one out system! I’m not convinced about just learning licks verbatim either other than having some go tos when my head has nothing.
So extra credit for sticking with it (my own efforts fell by the wayside)
Cool backing track you built too. -

Nice one, Jola. That was really fun to listen to. I know it took you a long time to harvest all those and transpose them into the right key. I had a laugh when it occurred to me that your guitar career has gone backwards to most of us: You started off playing improv, then had to go back and learn some licks. Kind of like Benjamin Button.
Strangely enough, I recognized most of those licks, even though I never learned them.

I totally relate JoLa as I also cannot remember any particular licks, and in fact this time I turned to an EP rich in licks😅 anyway you did great, and I think your creative process going to your musical influences is the one that really makes us memorize licks even if we don’t realize it. And the overall result is an awesome submission, great!
If I wasn't making mistakes I wouldn't be the kind of player I want to be. Perfection is dangerous.
It's all about taking risks, sometimes you get to some place, sometimes you get to a different place. (Brian May) -

No offensive to any other subs for this challenge, but this is the best submission in terms of creativity and playing.
Well done!!

This sounds just too delicious, JoLa. I can’t believe you just learned all these licks. And beyond this, your composition was so dreamy cool. And you say you made the backing track also–Unbelievabe!
Impeccable playing and awesome guitar tone! Hooray!!

Hi Jola, so glad you hung in there and made it to this month’s challenge! This sounded great! Such a strong Gilmore/Crazy Diamond feel to the track and your licks. I know we all try to get clean takes and sound solid in our videos, but seeing a work-in-progress is refreshing and very, very relatable.
This challenge, along with watching everyone’s submission, has got me thinking differently about licks. I always considered them a particular set line, but now I really see them as just foundational ideas. Depending on the context, you can take the basic idea and vary it however makes sense. Another tool for the toolbox!

Excellent…if it was a learning process for you, it was an education for me too! Naming the licks like that really focused my attention, and you were right in the groove with them.

Well that all sure worked well. It just flowed effortlessly from you. Maybe some of your best? Yes I think so.
