Hi AMers
I initially planned to create to compose sth reasonably over the Quist track
but got out of time due to hot summer temperatures, holidays, my father in hospital etc.
So I just listened to the track a few times and then practised a bit the Am pentatonics and chord voicings for Am, Dm and Em but with no idea how to built up the improv🤔🙄.As you can see in my DAW in the background this is my 3rd take which gave somehow a bit of a “melodical sense”.
My weaknesses: Missing licks in my pocket, timing, pentatonic patterns. I tend to always play the same. And without playing rhythm and chords I often feel lost in space.
I am certainly going to work on these points. Now I am looking forward to your ideas.

On the contrary Denise, you might have felt lost but the reality is, your improv came over very nicely indeed, quite melodic and hitting the root notes where it mattered.

Great playing. It reminds me of Gilmour flavour.

Cool use of the wah pedal Denise. I think the slow and open feel of this track lends to us tending to noodle about, but on your second cycle especially you used the space to your advantage letting your lead tones ring out over the track. Nice one!

Nicely done Denise and a lovely wah effect added a little pizzazz. I especially liked the slide up to the 7th and 9th fret and back down again at about the 1:00 minute mark. Really cool.

You’re not giving yourself enough credit, Denise. The solo came across as very melodic and your stock phrases worked just fine. The auto-wah was a nice touch, also.

John, actually no auto pedal. I used my wah pedal manually, which was another challenge for my brain sync. The wah effect was to distract from my improv 😆.

Sorry about your father, hope he’s getting better.
The way you’ve taken care of the sound is really inspiring Denise! I mean, I totally excluded this option, that on the contrary is very important, no matter it’s about a first take. The melodic aspect is also very good, congrats! If I wasn't making mistakes I wouldn't be the kind of player I want to be. Perfection is dangerous.

I don’t believe anyone has used a wah pedal on a challenge before and you handled it beautifully despite the distraction of an ill parent. You really made that guitar talk. You occasionally dropped in a nice light chord, too, and voiced some really cool runs. And I think your first response to the track is reflected in the way, like me, you arrive at certain notes just a tad late because you can’t anticipate where the track will go and are not sure your guess will be the right one. This, of course, clears up with a little practice and repetition.

That was absolutely beautiful Denise.
Very nice improv.
You gave it a Hendrix feel with the wah.

Wah, yeah! You don’t give yourself enough credit, Denise, your playing was wonderful! It was a true pleasure to hear the wah pedal (great choice, it sounded like a human voice, so expressive!) and to see your gorgeous Misty 🙂 You incorporated the chord voicings perfectly. That was also my intention but I failed. You should be proud, the improv was unrushed and it sounded REALLY good!👌
Best wishes/prayers for your Father 🙏❤️ Hope things get better for you and your family soon. I just had my Mom pass away which prompted unscheduled trip to Poland in June.

No weaknesses recognizable for me, Denise. If you really have no licks in your pocket, I would say you can 100% rely on your musical feel. It seems, it leads you always right. Great wah wah effect
Take the chance to meet your AM friends on Zoom
The next Meetup is expected to take place in November 2025There will be a detailed announcement here in the forum in good time.
I look forward to meet you.

An excellent music creation Denise. You have an awesome strength in how you listen to and play with the track – the timing of your phrases within the track is impeccable! And it sounds great combined with your note selection and embellishment techniques. 👏🏻👏🏻 Tom

Denise,
This moved along nicely. It started good and took a turn for freaking really good. I kind of felt lost too, but like you, I see this as a beginning not an end. I want to redo mine but hey. Back to you, I love the effects, really effective as they accentuated your tasteful chops. Hey well done my rock and roll buddy. I am impressed. I am curious to know what effects you were using. They were tasty!JH

Could have fooled me if you were lost! Your fretboard knowledge really comes through on this one. The auto-wah works great on this track!

Hi Denise!! Most importantly – HOW IS YOUR PAPA???? I lost my Dad 18 months ago suddenly and it still stings!! Hope all is well.
Ok, on to gitfiddle: Absolutely LOVED 1:07-1:12!!! 🙂 Do a ton of that for it sounded AWESOME. The wah reminded me of Jimi’s RED HOUSE , so nice choice of being different on a challenge where everyone will dive into Am Pent – LOL!Bob U. (aka Bobby Ut)

Hi Denise , nice work with this track your hitting those chord tones perfectly with some fine phrasing ,the passage starting at 1.34 concluded things superbly , you use the wah pedal to great effect in this and adds a nice dynamic.
Excellent post 👌As a side note , cool that you are visiting Devon /Cornwall next year it’s a lovely part of the West Country, I am in Somerset so yes would be nice to meet up on your way down .

Wow Denise, I think on the contrary you have a lot of sweet licks in your pocket and you combined them brilliantly in your improvisation! Loved that slide on triad at the beginning of the second cycle (1:02), so cool! And in general liked very much your phrasing along the entire performance. Then the cherry on the top of the cake was this beautiful wah effect, really perfect for this minor blues! Excellent work!

Ahh that was lovely Denise! Really liked your use of Wah, and didn’t find any issue with repetition (as you suggest). Really good – very well played.

Denise, Yes!!! So glad you changed your mind and decided to post this month, especially with everything going on at home. You’ve given us all a treat with this. The wah tone not only sounds fantastic but you really played to it by the restraint you showed in your phrasing and the space you left to let the effect ring out. Those little arpeggiated D minor chords sounded absolutely amazing.
Loved the little triad slides to mark out the start of cycle two as well and I liked the repetition, I didn’t think it was overdone and gave my ear something to relate to. Really great submission. -

Hi Denise
Improvisation of great charm, spaces that let the notes breathe and give energy to our imagination. I believe that this challenge is especially useful to us who play to make us understand where we are and force us to find strategies to escape the labyrinth of the fretboard.Livio
