Hello friends!
Today, when I came home from work and after eating diner with my family, I went down to my Blues Basement and recorded the July challenge.
This is my first take, however I did listen to the jam track and playing some notes before that, to determine what tone setting I should use. So, I think, I listened to the whole backing tracks once, before I started recording. Also, I listened to Brian’s version straight after he published the lesson, but not since. To prepare myself, I had a look at the A minor-pentatonic scale all over the fretboard. I also planned to play some chord changes, but that plan did get lost during recording …
After the first take a played some more, because – even though I did not plan to use these takes – I wanted to prove to myself that I can do better than that. However, while some parts did sound better, regarding the whole improvisation, this was not the case. Rather frustrating.I am looking forward to seeing your versions: I would have played the same improvisation a year ago, meaning I do not think my improvisation skills improved at all over the last year(s). So I desperately need some inspiration. I am sure you will not disappoint me in that regard. 😊
Cheers,
Juxi 👋🏽P.S. I never was so early to submit (the video work took most of the time) – this is a point in favor of doing only one take. I will try to keep that up (at least I’ll try to reduce the number of takes significantly).
P.P.S. I played over the whole backing track, but I shortened the video, so that you will not get too bored.
Bluesige Grüße

Juxi!
You Rock and you Roll!! Great stuff!
And so great to see you on the Zoom!
Here is what I LOVED: At 1:24 – the bend/hold/release!! Wonderful stuff!!
Loved the play @ 1:38: In the style of David Gilmour!!! Superb
Awesome double stop/slides @ 1:45!!!
My only humble advice (If I may): Surprise us with different beats and rhythms.
Use triplets (both 8th and quarter note), 16th notes!
You do such a great job of “skipping” beat one – well done!!
You’ve got the chops.
Surprise us with your talent my friend!

I thought you did well Juxi. I liked all those bends especially, I think, that step and a half bend. Really cool melody you had going on here.

This got better as it went on Juxi, if you can finish strong the minutes before don’t tend to matter with improv, haha 🙂
Even the best improvisers are generally improvising over a song they know well…so to only have listened to get the sound of it for a few minutes this is nice work!

A great impromptu submission Juxi, with only a brief view at what was coming you did extremely well, particularly the full and difficult bends.

Great job Juxi. Your improv quickly turned itself into a structured song, I thought. Also great tone on that lovely PRS.

Don’t be so hard on yourself, Juxi, great job on a first take and you used positions all over the neck. Keep working on hearing and seeing those chord shapes. That’s such a beautiful guitar with so many voicing options.

Great work on this Juxi. It’s a challenging task to take on that we can all appreciate. Super impressive work around the fire scene (1.18 mark). You covered a lot of the fretboard which speaks volumes in what you can pull out in your guitar vocabulary.

Wow Juxi! yes, this time you were among the first ones to submit, yet the video is so good, both performance and editing, as it’s always the case with your submissions 🙂 very inspiring the way you move down the fretboard starting from the first position, gut gemacht!
If I wasn't making mistakes I wouldn't be the kind of player I want to be. Perfection is dangerous.
It's all about taking risks, sometimes you get to some place, sometimes you get to a different place. (Brian May) -

You shouldn’t be too hard on yourself. This was a fine first shot out of the box. And in your defense (and everyone’s in fact) this track was not an easy one to play to, partly because it sounds a lot like elevator music or something the dentist puts on to distract you from the drilling. You found your way around the fret board nicely. One trick I can mention (if you are looking for input) is to mix it up between slow riffs and fast ones. On a slow piece like this, the change of pace can be refreshing.
(Nice looking PRS, by the way.)

Nice Juxi, you went easy on the first past, good idea.
You Just let it go after that.
You got some wild bend in there.
Very good first take bud.AndréM

In a variation of the proverb, I would say: The early bird catches the lick, Juxi. And I would add: You do this all over fretboard and show that you can easily find your way around it. After a scanning start, you go into the full with a few really impressive bends. A top performance!
You are an inspiration!
Also stell dein Licht nicht unter den Scheffel! Viele Grüße nach Wolfegg!Take the chance to meet your AM friends on Zoom
The next Meetup is expected to take place in November 2025There will be a detailed announcement here in the forum in good time.
I look forward to meet you.

Loved it, Juxi! You played with a lot of patience and plenty of room to breathe, that was nice! I liked how you started simple and then dived into it a bit more coming up with nice melodies. Your guitar had a nice warm tone, sounded very smooth to me! 🙂

Well played Juxi, really nice bends and following the chord changes.

Your improv sounded great Juxi. Your note selection was musical and interesting, and there was good variety through use of fretboard range and embellishments. I agree with you that playing in one take has virtue. It seemed surprisingly relaxing in that it gave the gift of time to do other things:-) Cheers, Tom

Hi Juxi , that’s was some impressive off the cuff improv you seemed to get into the more it went on , the bend at 1.24 was superb also a good fretboard workout with excellent use of space letting things breathe a bit

Liked very much your improvisation, Juxy! I think you’re a bit too hard toward yourself, and that you’re improved very much in your skills during the last year!
The first cycle was like a warm up, and then you came up with very melodic and sweet phrases! For example, I also have noticed, like Bob, the Gilmour-esque 1 and half bend at 01:38, really cool! And then there are many other very good phrases! Great work!Guido

That was brilliantly orchestrated and played. Loved the video which accentuated your tasty and timely licks. Your bends resolve magnificently to where they are supposed to land. Great stuff here.JH

Don’t be hard on yourself Juxi. That was a really fine improvisation. You started out slow, with some simple phrasing, developed a theme and built on that with some very tasty ideas. That’s a great structure. That was an epic bend at 1:40, right when the track needed it and loved the double stop runs that followed.
And I know I mention it every time you bring it out but.. Man!!! That is one gorgeous PRS 😍 -

I totally understand where you are coming from, when you say you are playing the same old licks all over again. But I think your (and my own) views are flawed in the way that we tend not to see our progress as well as “outsiders”. Judging by your last videos that I saw, I would say your progress has been quite phenomenal. Rewatch your video in a few weeks or months and you will see what I mean. That being said, I think you delivered a solid piece of art here. It sounded good, there were plenty of ideas that a noobie would never have. Also, I did not hear any “wrong” note – and that after just 1 take. Solid, Juxi, really solid work.

Hey Juxi, I like these bends, double stop and your relaxed playing. Well done. Actually I also found it hard to get inspired and to incorporate licks that I have learnt from Brian.

Hi Juxi
Your negative thoughts about improvisation are a bit like mine too; in my case I do generally poor training in this regard so my complaint is without reason. In any case I see that everyone did well, in the sense that they were also very well in the harmonic groove. I was satisfied with mine and I think your challenge is excellent and enjoyable. I believe that our goal is to find the strategies, naturally with training to learn to find the ways out of the freatbord labyrinth. Once this is done we will be able to dedicate ourselves with more freedom to the creative aspect of improvisation without naturally expecting masterpieces but at least one dignified phrasing in tune with harmony.Livio
