Some of you might think I have given up on the electric guitar but you would be wrong 🙂 As part of the March Challenge I have been working through those ‘Shapes’ lessons Brian put out. If you haven’t tried them, it is a very useful way to look at the fretboard. I so much enjoyed playing EP557, I thought I would record it and put it up as I don’t typically play electric guitars without backing and I thought this was a great opportunity to have a go at that.
I also had a go at EP551 which is a really nice Country style lesson. Did the original and threw in some of my own.

Hi Geoff
I work through every lesson and I found the shapes insightful.
I am always amazed, every lesson has these “light bulb” moments.
I shouldn’t be surprised that you do such a good job of classical, then turn around a do a great country piece.
ThanksKen F

Thanks Ken. I think there is always something to take away from Brian’s lessons. It’s why I keep coming back to them.
These “shapes” lessons just follow on from the other themes he teaches but it is a useful approach for sure 👍

Nice work Geoff. There were a couple of quicker runs in EP557 and some hybrid picking in EP551. Pretty cool!

Really nice job on both, Geoff. Your tone sounded beautiful on both guitars. There was a really lovely vibrato at 55 sec on the country piece.

Thanks John. I think the vibrato thing is a page I took out of your book 😎

I agree with Charjo-great tone on both. Nicely done. You are doing a fine job exploring these shapes. I am struggling through with both myself, trying to compose something for the next Challenge. Just when I have a break through other possibilities open up. There is no end to this.

It really is endless isn’t it John. Playing guitar seriously is like jumping into a bottomless pit – in a good way of course 🙃.
I think this is just another useful way to look at the fretboard. At the end of the day I just pick the key, pick the scale and use my ear – the lazy man’s approach. Interesting lesson series though 🤔

Really nice performances, Geoff – good to hear you haven’t totally thrown aside your electrics! I especially liked the second video, with the Jam track 👍🎶😎

I enjoy them Mark. Playing two very different styles keeps things interesting and keeps me playing!

Great playing Geoff! Outstanding work, especially the second piece. One of your very best! The lesson, the impro, the feel and the tone: absolutely top rate! 👏👏🌟👏👏 You’ve inspired me to put the Country one on my ‘To Do’ list. Thanks for sharing. All the best! 😎🎸😎

Odd thing Garry is I didn’t think I liked Country but I sure enjoy playing it 😁

Congratulations my friend ❤️ 👏 💕
You played the first one (which I also practiced when it was posted)greatly and the country melodic one was absolutely beautiful!!!I think this style suits you ,that’s why you improvised so fluently!!!💕💖❤️-

I guess it’s the melodic aspect of Country that I enjoy. A bit like classical in that way 😉

Brilliant renditions, Geoff! The EP557 was very good, but I liked especially the EP551, really beautifully played, with flawless bends and very nice vibratos. Great tone from your Squier: sometimes those economic instruments are surprisingly very good (and, OK, the player’s skills make always a difference!)

Hi there Guido. The past few months I have been doing Jams with a ‘Guitar Buddy’ downstairs from me. He has all the very best guitars from American Made Strats to Gibson Les Paul’s. When I play his guitars I notice that they are a definitely nicer on the fretboard but, when it comes to sound, I am not convinced it is necessary to buy an expensive guitar.
I bought that Squire as a cheapo with the intention that I would, one day, replace it with a ‘proper’ Strat. I am actually so happy with my Squire that I decided to get a completely different guitar rather than replace it.
Don’t get me wrong. I think there are good reasons to buy an expensive guitar but I suspect it boils down, at least as much, to aesthetics as the sound. I mean, who doesn’t like to be holding a quality instrument in one’s hands 🙂

Nice job on these Geoff.
It’s always good to do a stand-alone piece to emphasise your clean guitar sound and that Guild sounds fantastic.
I have to agree that these types of lessons can just go on and on.

Thanks for listening Tao. I don’t really feel like I do all that much. I know the key so I just pick the matching scale pattern and let my ear do the rest. Of course Brian’s lessons extend the toolkit with licks so we can do a little more – all great fun of course 🙂
