I have a guild acoustic guitar that is over 50 years old and use D’Addario Phosphor Bronze EJ16-5P string.
The problem I have is when I try to finger pick some of the strings deaden no matter how hard I press.
Am I using the wrong string? Do I need to strengthen my hand?

Hi Herb,
I have those on my Taylor right now with no problem. I usually use Elixir Nanowebs on acoustics because of the coating and longevity but the D’Addario EJ16’s phosphor bronze sound great and are a good choice. I’m guessing the issue lies elsewhere.Mike

maybe I need to work my finger muscles. Finger picking should not be painful right?

Hey Herb, are you saying you just have trouble pressing the string down hard enough? I’ve seen that happen with young girls who try to learn the guitar, but never an adult. What gauge are those strings? I use the lightest gauge possible on my electrics and acoustics, so maybe you need to go to a lighter gauge string. For my acoustics, I use Elixir Nanowebs, 010s. You could also go to 009s, which would cause some volume loss, but who cares unless you are standing on a stage in front of 20,000 people.

I believe, It’s neither your fingers nor the strings, Herb. It might be the guitar. Perhaps it needs a setup. I would ask a luthier?

Definitely have a luthier check it out. I think it likely the action is too high and it needs a full setup. As guitars age they get out of whack.
Which reminds me, my mid-Nineties Martin 000-16 could do with a full setup, it hasn’t had one since I picked it up from the dealer. I adjust the truss rod now and again but that’s all. Luthiers do setups every day, there are multiple steps and measurements involved.

The guitar is almost as old as me. I need to bring it in. Thanks for all the comments.
