OK, the January challenge! It was hard to make this interesting, because I just basically played the exercise. But even so you can see where these patterns could fit, especially walking down or walking up to chord changes.
And introducing the new Martin guitar. Got it a week ago, first one I ever had, and I’m still getting used to the fretboard so I play it a little clunky. Looking forward to getting familiar with it.
Here we go, the January Challenge . . .
Just focus on the notes you DID get right . . . Frank Vignola

Nice picking and I really liked the chords that you added in! Congrats on the new Martin! I put 10’s on mine one time; too much tone loss and buzzing. Went right back to the 11’s.

Congrats on the new guitar, Bruce. The Martin is beautiful. And the four note pattern seem to be the ideal way to explore it. Fine improv with a nice laugh at the end. Enjoy your new guitar, Bruce

Congrats on your new guitar Bruce , the scale exercises and that four note sequence will break it in nicely also a fine finger workout as you so demonstrated.
Ps . I use 12 gauge on my acoustics they do take some getting used to after playing electric .Martin

Bruce
You should have a ‘guitar’ podcast. Great story. Congrats on your new acquisition. Getting used to a new guitar and neck takes time. Remember, you kept coming back to it for a reason. I have been on a Martin buying spree, bought 3 in the past 6 years: D-16, 000-15M, and a 000-16). Each one is different and required a set up. But man, they are the best. Enjoy your new axe!BTW-nice picking’!

Great playing Bruce…I could tell that last note was difficult! Congrats on the new guitar too!

Classic! Go into the guitar store for a pickup come out with a Martin! What is it about those places 🤣. I actually went into mine for Martin or some acoustic and came out with Fender Ultra! Still with the full knowledge that I’ll need to go back for that acoustic. Well, you christened it with a beautiful rendition….right up to the last note 😅.

Nice new guitar Bruce! You and Juxi made recent “investments”. Love it. You are absoluteley right. The key to this challenge is to not make it sound like an exercise or pure scale. Sprinking in is the key. I always love you pesentations! Nicely done.

Bruce, I hope you love that guitar as much as I love mine. I purchased a used Robert Thompson last March and I have not been able to put it down since. It has really helped my playing too. Ya, keep heavier strings…you will appreciate the rich sound quality after your fingers adapt to it. By the way, if you ever get the chance to tour the Martin Guitar Factory (Nazareth, PA), I highly recommend it. Pap

Took me awhile to get used to my Martin, but yeah they are great. Short and sweet with nice runs!
Live on planet Earth ? You got the blues.

That is a beautiful sounding guitar! I bought a Martin Dreadnaught Junior a couple of years ago, and it’s become my go-to acoustic for recording, but for noodling around for ideas, I usually grab my Taylor Baby. It’s small, light, short scale, sounds great, and super easy to play acoustic blues on it. Everybody needs one in their guitar quiver.

Nice guitar, Bruce. You got the Cadillac of acoustics. You’ll be finger picking like Jorma before long.

Thanks!
for all the comments. Lotta ‘Martin People’ here. Sorry to see the old acoustic go, that’s the one I learned all my chords on.But it really didn’t sound like much so I never played it. But a couple of my buddies have nice acoustics, a Martin and an old Harmony, which I played, plus Brian’s recent acoustic challenge, made me get interested in the acoustic sound again. Now that I have one that is fun to listen to, it changes everything. I’ll be growing into it.
Thanks again.

Hi Bruce
Great that you have a Martin and it will take a bit of acclimatisation but they are wonderful instruments. I have a D45 and have Martin 12 95% phosphor bronze strings. Yes the guitar came setup with those on and I noted that 12s are rated by Martin as their light gauge. The resultant tone however is so much enhanced. The precision in their tone and fretting etc forces you to make every note count and be clearly heard …. I’m still struggling. But get it all right and the quality shines.
All the best
