The Active Melody December challenge 2023 was what would you play if someone asked you to play something. I’m never asked but if I were…I chose to play 3 pieces that showed how my playing is continuing to expand over these past 3 or 4 years.
First is 35 seconds of Lucky Man by Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Simple strumming and simple chords – G, D, Dsus2, Dsus4, Am, Em. This is one of the first songs I learned when I picked up the guitar 3 or 4 years ago.
Second is 40 seconds of Free Fallin’ by Tome Petty and The Heartbreakers. I learned this song a couple years ago. Again, it’s just simple strumming but the chords are a little different – D/A, Gsus2, Asus4. Then I found it sounded more like the original recording if I used a capo on the 3rd fret making the chords F/C, Bbsus2, Am7.
Finally is EP067 from Active Melody…I’ve always wanted to play lead but I also wanted to learn to play rhythm with lead fills. AM member KenG recommended EP067. That was just what I was looking for! It’s in the style of John Lee Hooker and is in the Key of E using the chords – G, A, E. Of course I don’t do it justice but I’m starting to learn lead fills and am very happy with my progress.
If anyone has any constructive criticism on my playing or suggestions on which lessons would be good for me to try I’d appreciate it. I’ll search for more myself too…I’m so grateful I found AM and think Brian is a great teacher. And the online community here on AM is by far the best I have ever found!
I always look forward to hearing all of your most excellent submissions. Thanks for listening and I hope everyone had a happy and safe holiday.

Great choices of songs/music to showcase Joe. Free Fallin’ is always a sure winner when you play it to someone and I really enjoyed EP067. I don’t think I’ve heard it before and you’ve inspired me to take a closer look at it. Re Rhythm and Fills lesson from Brian. I learnt EP195 a while back being an Aussie and fan of AC/DC that lesson is a beauty if you’re interested. All the best! 😎🎸😎

I enjoyed your choices of songs and also your playing very much, Joe. You show how much fun you have playing the music you love. I didn’t know EP067. I have to look for it.
If you are also interested to play a lesson with rhythm and fill licks for the acoustic, I can recommend EP211. I learned it more than a year ago and play it with much fun since then.Take the chance to meet your AM friends on Zoom
The next Meetup is expected to take place in November 2025There will be a detailed announcement here in the forum in good time.
I look forward to meet you.

Great submission Joe. Like the others I don’t know EP067 but it sounds like a good one to try. I thought your version of Free Falling was excellent.

Good selection Joe, and it certainly showed your versatility, I naturally warmed to your EP067, you had that one down a treat. Listening to that took me back a few years here at Active Melody.
I would agree with Manfred that EP211 is another good one to learn.Richard
PS: Is that a Guitar Shop your playing in?-

Nice song choices, Joe. ‘Oh What A Lucky Man’ indeed. With all those guitars and Brian’s lessons, you’re on your way. Keep working the lessons and recording yourself for the challenges. You’ll make great strides in your playing.

Hi Joe , nice little medley, played so well , you’re enthusiasm is evident 👌, and an impressive guitar collection.
You asked for recommendations there’s loads to choose from and that’s the problem ( but a nice one !) I would suggest pick a couple and stick with them , Ep127 is one I’ve gleaned a lot from it’s quite a straightforward 12 bar with fills but one you can definitely expand on ………. Have fun .Martin

Hey Joe – Love your song choices and performances. And it’s very cool that you do a great job singing as well playing guitar. There are so many great lesson from Brian you can’t go wrong. To make a reco, I’d suggest EP289. It’s a popular jazzy blues that many people have enjoyed – it’s very fun to learn, and to play. HNY. Cheers, Tom

Very nice selection of songs, Joe! “Lucky man” by the great Greg Lake, one of my favourites! Then Tom Petty and this EP067: I didn’t check this lesson before, and it’s a very good one, so thanks for sharing! Enjoyed very much to listen to your playing and singing, an excellent medley!

Good song choices there Joe, Favourite was Free Falling, so good. You have played Ep067, then you might like Ep218, it has a similar vibe also in the Key E. Keep up the good work.

That’s a fine choice of songs for a play something moment and enjoyed them all, though Free Fallin’ inched out in front as my favourite. Top performance all round.
I’m a huge fan of Brian’s “Rhythm and Fill Licks”. They’re fun to play as well as training those essentials like timing etc. They’re all excellent choices for the “Play something” dilemma! People love a rhythm and won’t care if you mess up the occasional lead fill. You could take a look at EP087 too. A different vibe to EP067 but a great lesson all the same.-

I agree with Andy, Joe. Free Fallin’ was my favorite, too. But I also liked the ELP-song – I did not hear it for a very long time (I automatically tried to sing along in the second voice (though I am not very good at it, glad that nobody could hear that) 😉
Well done! Stay tuned.
As for lessons to learn: If you do like Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits, I would suggest EP 110. It is not hard to do and sooo much fun while playing.Bluesige Grüße

Hey Joe, (no pun intended!): Some nice strumming and very recognizable riffs there. Boy, I haven’t heard an Emerson, Lake, and Palmer tuned since I was a teen… liked them a lot back then. You did these justice Sir!

If you hit the open B (or better yet, G fretted at the 4th fret), followed by the open high E string, you have the opening lick, then adapt what you already have, you’re just about there. There are some differences, but EP067 gets you close. After about 4 times doing that, you substitute G fretted at the 4th fret and B fretted at the 3rd fret when you go to the A chord.

Hi Joe. Just watched your video there. What a great set of songs and showcasing how you’ve learnt quite a few styles and your singing to boot! I need to have a word with myself as I’m still afraid of the singing – but maybe this is the year to throw caution aside!
