Over the past few weeks I have been working on music from the 16th Century because the guitar didn’t exist then and the music has a different flavor. Lute composers and musicians were very skilled artisans and I love the way they weave separate melodies together like thread. In all of these, both parts can be played as solo pieces in themselves but putting them together just sounds really cool.
This is a little suite of three pieces that I have put together from that era. For full stereo effect, it is best to listen to these with headphones.
La Rosignol:
Toy for two Lutes. I think the composer must have meant this name as some kind of joke because it is no joke to play this one. The accompaniment is oddly somber but the lead is fast and ‘sparkly’ – I struggled with the speed on this one.
Echo for two Lutes. The one comment I will make on this is ‘call and response’ is nothing new. Musicians have been doing that since the dark ages.

They all sounded beautiful Geoff. I even got to hear the stereo separation on my monitors without using headphones. Very nicely mixed. I don’t suppose those were easy pieces to learn but you did it well…now go clean up that living room!

Oh darn Joe, I had better do that before my wife get’s back. She will kill me if she sees it in that state 🙁

Good stuff Geoff, very cool. My favourite is Echo for Two Lutes.

Thanks Ken. That one actually sounds completely different when you put the two parts together. The ‘call and response’ on that is really neat.

All the three pieces sounded very good, Geoff! Very interesting compositions and I guess they needed a lot of practice! Very nice also the stero effect. Perhaps my preference goes to first one, “La Rossignol”.

My favorite too Guido. I had to put in a crazy amount of practice to get these down but, I have to say, I really do enjoy putting the parts together with video editing software. It’s just fun.

These are all terrific, Geoff. I agree with Guido – my preference is “La Rossignol”.

That’s awesome Geoff!! Your playing seems to get better all the time. A special nod out to the video editing!

Thank you Mike. I feel like video editing is something of a black art that I have been trying to figure out how to do well for the past two years or so – its like playing the guitar, a little bit here and a little bit there :). Glad you enjoyed this.

You’re sounding pretty much like Julian Bream himself, Jeff. A lot of practice time went into these obviously.

I wish Steve 🙂 I am sure you know that Julian Bream was an absolute master Lute player.

Yet another group of masterful performances, Geoff 👏🎶. Of the three, my favourite has to be ‘La Rosignol’ – you seemed a lot more relaxed in this one 🤓. The ‘Toy for two Lutes’ certainly is a fast one, and it’s easy to see why you say “it is no joke to play this one” – but I thought you played them all with your usual class and finesse!
Again, I listened to all of these on Headphones and Monitors – and they sounded great on both! Your audio and video production skills are going from strength to strength – I recall you saying how you were struggling when you first tried this, but you seem to be mastering and thoroughly enjoying playing with this now, which is great to see! 🙂
The thing I particularly love about your more recent performances are the ‘Nods’ to your ‘twin brother’ 🙂. This has quickly become a signature part of your videos and never fails to make me smile – please keep this going 👍😎
Best wishes my friend ♥️

Oh thank you Mark, this is a much needed boost to my ego 🙂
I think recording is a bit like playing. It’s one of those things I am learning a little bit here and a little bit there, I have as much fun with it these days as playing.

Nicely done, Geoff. What a challenge to learn both parts and play them so well. Great job in putting the two parts together with the timing.

Thanks James, I have to strum a spike on both parts and line them up. Its crude but it seems to work OK.

Excellent playing Geoff and so well ‘in sync’ which is what duets are all about. Yes, La Rossignol resonates best with me but fantastic performance of all 3 pieces. Great also to see the famous respectful ‘nod’ before and after performances. All the best! 😎🎸😎
