I’ve been a fan of Jacob Collier for a few years now. He’s one of the most talented singer/songwriter multi-instrumentalists out there. What’s interesting about this session is: He invited a group of his fans to show up, all wearing something blue, and on the spot taught them some choral vocals. The sound engineers from Mahogany Sessions pride themselves on doing their recordings with minimal mics showing. Here’s what they said:
“We’ve been doing our sessions with no mics in shot for 15 years now, and very good guesses so far in the comments for how we captured this performance 👀 Ok so, we had DPA lav mics on Jacob: 1 in hat + wireless receiver for his guitar, and then we had the room mics for the choir which you can see. Also never any overdubbing as there’s no simply need – the room was incredible for reverb and so still – so a perfect canvas for us to work on.” Then there’s Jacob’s amazing fingerstyle picking. He is stringing his guitar based on fifths for the low 3 strings like a cello, then 2 fourths on top acting like drones similar to other alt tunings. i.e. DAEAD/E, like a variation on the classic DADGAD. Really fascinating to improvise with and compose triads on those lower strings which is hard to do in standard tuning. Am finding alt tunings a really good way to improvise with fresh sounding chords.
