Hi members,
Didn’t think I’d make it since Brian and I both got our first taste of Covid in the same week.
I learned a valuable lesson about struggling, ie. sometimes it’s not worth it!
The fast lick at 30s of this video has eluded me for months. Brian picks every note and I was determined to duplicate that at full tempo. I tried every possible picking combination using alternate and economy picking but it didn’t sound right and was choppy. Finally, yesterday, I decided to implement one little pull-off. I don’t think anyone would notice but me.
So the moral of my story is, when the struggle is too much it may be time for the workaround. I nailed that lick but of course there was no world in which I was going to also get the second difficult lick😒.
The struggle continues.John

Wow John. That was a great solo. I wish I could emulate what you did there. Very impressive and I’m sure you’ll nail the second like in your next attempt. So hard to get it all together when the cameras are rolling! I speak from experience! Well done again!!

Oh John! How I struggled with this EP, I remember considering every little detail about the fingering and the picking particularly for the first speed lick. You’ve really mastered the piece, congrats!
If I wasn't making mistakes I wouldn't be the kind of player I want to be. Perfection is dangerous.
It's all about taking risks, sometimes you get to some place, sometimes you get to a different place. (Brian May) -

Great point John. Always sounds best to play like “you” play. You’ve got the awesome situation of having mastered a lot of technique and have many options to produce your sound. Beautifully played. Cheers, Tom

Thanks, Vincent. That’s an older strat of mine. The bridge had more bite for this than my newer strat.

Great playing John! The solo sounds brilliant and your timing is superb. Whatever your modification, it worked!

Get well soon, bro.
You are the AM official shredder.
You nailed it.
I don’t think I would make an attempt of that lesson unless I play it at minus 120 BPM.
You are a brave man compadre.AndréM

Ahh, John! That smile of satisfaction at the end!☺️
You did indeed nail it which – in your case – means playing EXACTLY like Brian or better!
I don’t know if there is anything wrong with hammer-ons, I thought that’s what the teachers often advise to utilize to play faster runs? And you’re right, only you noticed that 🙂You’re a perfectionist, I love that! And you avoided looking at the fretboard – super impressive!

Thanks, Jola. No, the smile was an acknowledgement that I tripped over the last lick after rolling through the tough one and knowing I wasn’t doing another take.

You couldn’t have picked a meaner tune… Blues Breakers all the way. You are being too hard on yourself. If you stumbled you recovered nicely.

Well that was Brilliant John. Very clean and well played even at that speed so you can be pleased with this performance for sure.
I remember Helen and I did this one way back and our speed was nowhere close to this. The best I can do with Brian’s fast lessons is about 80, maybe, 90% any faster and it gets sloppy.

I love it John! “knowing I wasn’t doing another take” is what happens to me every recording!

Wonderfully played John. Awesome tone and feel. Also great point with your story moral. Sometimes it is better to punt on a particular lick and just go with workaround that is more appropriate for your playing.
Also if it’s your work around it may end up sounding better because it’s your interpretation.
This rocked tho. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Wow John, that’s cookin’! 🔥🔥🔥 That first difficult lick! To get that is top class for sure! The whole performance, great to listen to and the sound of your Strat is spot on. I remember doing this one and playing at a much slower speed. Again, great playing! 👏👏🌟👏👏 Keep on pickin’ and all the best! 🥸🎸🥸

Man, if that’s how you are going to play with Covid…watch out when you are fully recovered! That was a finger burning lick for sure. And no doubt if you did a dozen more takes sometimes it’d happen and others not, but maybe that’s what this month is all about? Showing us how ‘perfection’ is fleeting…it can be there one take and not another.
Glad you are feeling better John! -

Superb John, your playing is so relaxed it seems to just roll off your fingers and that number was certainly no easy task. Being as though you played most of it so well without looking at the fretboard I think your next hurdle should be ‘to read a newspaper while you’re playing’😃

Hi John!
Once again, to my ear you played great!
Sometimes I alter the lesson or create a work around to get past a section of a composition that I struggle with… usually seems to work fine…nice playing John 🎶🙂Don P

Hi John, hope you’re recovering well and feeling better. Great playing with amazing groove. Those licks are tough! You nailed the first one, of course, even with a little pull-off. Sounds great. The struggle to do it without the pull-off was likely a good exercise for producing those little incremental improvements. And the second one? Yeah, sounds like the battle we all face at times. Really glad you made it to the challenge this month, and it’s inspirational to not only hear you play, but to see your challenges too. Best.

Hi John , good to see you nailed that first lick with a subtle alteration it worked a treat ! Nice groove throughout full of detail and those finer nuances, liked the way you played through that minor stumble at the end and just grinned ,
It’s funny how the guitar seems to always have the last word !Martin

Sometimes it‘s the safe ground, on which we stumble, Charjo. But who cares, this is such superb playing and your tone is fantastic. It cuts like a knife. Great groove and great atmosphere in your playing. Really thrilling! And you mastered your trouble spot! All the best wishes for your recovery!

Sorry for the late response John!
You hit the NAIl right on the HEAD!!!
Pick?
Pull-off?
No
Body
will ever know!!!
Except you!! That is why you are smiling! Griff Hamlin says the Zacksame (Pittsburghese for exactly the same thing) about picking versus H-O and P-O! Well done my friend.
And, hope you and Coach B both recover quickly. I had it when it was sexy and new (Nov 2020). I’m still strumming and chasing kids! Well done my friend! BBob U. (aka Bobby Ut)

A beautiful lesson (I like the Gm chord and all these possible licks and phrases you can play over it) and you simply nailed it brilliantly! Played spotlessly at the original tempo! Phenomenal performance and rendition, John!

It’s lovely to watch you rip through this solo John. Sorry did you say there was a misplaced pulloff somewhere in there? My apologies if I missed it. Well done on this submission!

You did quite well John. I wouldn’t complain if I could play it as well as you!
