On occasions, you come across a recording where a younger player gets to record with someone who has been a huge influence on them. In 2004, Alvin released his album In Tennessee, recorded at the home studio of his mentor Scotty Moore, guitarist for Elvis with DJ Fontana, Elvis’ drummer also taking part in the recording
The album was recorded on Friday evening & Saturday and on Sunday, Alvin was flying out with the master tapes

        From Scotty’s website:
        http://scottymoore.net/alvinlee.html

As Alvin and Scotty performed together on many of the songs, it was obvious that Alvin gave the utmost respect to Scotty; he could have easily burned up the fretboard and made Scotty look bad but that definitely wasn’t the case
The song “Take My Time” is a great indication of the interplay that they enjoyed

In Tennessee is a great album start to finish

Even on a slow number like “Take my Time” the quality of Alvin’s playing shines through. You are turning me into even more an Alvin fan, Keith.

I just listened to this album and thought it was great. Alvin definitely had a variety of styles in his fingers! He was truly one of the greatest guitarists many people never talk about. I would rate him at the top with Jimi H. and Eddy V..

That’s a new one for me Keith. It seems Alvin could play any style at the highest level. Good to see him with his mentor Scottie and the fellas. Too bad he didn’t get to accompany Elvis. Thanks Keith

I’ve mentioned it before that many people know Alvin only from the Woodstock performance of Goin’ Home and his incredible speed
I was fortunate to have access to a friends LP collection that included a lot of TYA albums and when I heard their album A Space In Time, I was as hooked on Alvin’s playing as I was on Duane Allman’s and Dickey Betts’ playing. Was hooked then and have been ever since
When you look at the history of the music scene around London in the late 60’s and early 70s, you see those that got all of the attention – Clapton, Beck, Page, Zepplin hanging out together and then you see others like Alvin &
TYA, George Harrison and others hanging out. You never see Alvin and TYA on stage with those others except when a lot of conflict alledgely took place
Here’s an article that makes you wonder about all of the tension and why it took place

Here’s a video of Ric Lee, drummer for TYA that sums Alvin up really well

Thanks for those clips Keith. I guess like a lot of people I just knew Alvin from TYA. I should have known better when one of my early modeling amps had about 20 Alvin Lee presets built in!

Along with Alvin’s stuff, I’ve been grooving along with some blues/jazz from Robin Ford!! I’m not a jazz person per se, but Robin’s self taught style at least has some beat to it!! lol

The solos in ‘Take My Time’ are classics and timeless.
