For me, the hardest part in EP508 was the first note. There is that big bend and it has to come in perfectly on the beat. On this I have to thank Helen for noticing that I was completely out of time when I hit that note and I didn’t even notice :(. The first two cycles are directly from the lesson and the last is my own improv using major pentatonics:
I know there have been at least 3 others who have showcased EP508 already so, if you have grown a little tired of hearing it, I also did EP505. I just love switching between the blues and Dorian mode:

Bother were awesome. If there was a bit of dirt added to that Dorian blues I would have thought it was Carlos Santana! Really, very well done.

Thanks so much Joe. One thing I love about that Guild guitar is it is very easy to put a clean sounding distortion on it.

That focus on timing, Geoff, has made all the difference – you were truly ‘with’ the band 👍 This is possibly your best lead submission to date! Wonderful stuff 😎
Best wishes my friend!

Thanks Mark, in the end I was quite pleased with this one and I have Helen’s ear to thank for it. She did a great job pointing out the error of my ways with previous attempts 🙂

Beautifully played both pieces, Geoff! I can’t be never tired of the 508, is one the nicest recent lesson and definitely already a “classic”, and you managed to play it very well, especially all those fast licks! And I’m especially impressed by your bends, in both lessons: you managed to play them always with a perfect pitch! I’m currently struggling to learn 508 and I know how it’s difficult to play those bends that switch from half to whole and viceversa!
The same with the EP505: really brilliantly played and I can see you was having a lot of fun playing it! You was playing with ease and made it look easy, but also in this case I know it isn’t. Really impressed how fast you’re becoming an accomplished electric guitar player! I agree, probably your best on electric: great job!Guido

Thanks Guido, I don’t normally favor the straight blues stuff but 508 is probably going to go down as a Brian classic like you say. I think a lot of people are going to have a go at it. One thing I found hard with this lesson was not to rush it as I had done on my first attempts at recording it – I found I really had to breath and wait on the beat. Brian did that ridiculously fast little bit but I don’t think it is really all that necessary to do it – I kludged that part.
EP508 is a tough lesson and it is worth spending time on it. On the bends I got a lot of Brian’s microlesson EP070 – that is a fantastic little lesson and I highly recommend that one.

I agree, EP508 already a classic Geoff and very well played. Kudos for nailing that fast run early in Brian’s cycle especially. I’ve been learning this one and know it’s a challenge. Your improv sounded awesome also! 👏👏🌟👏👏.
You’re really rocking EP505 as well. Just loved your long bends around the 1.15 mark and as previously mentioned above, you’re taking your improvisation to another level. Fantastic Geoff. Keep on pickin’ and all the best! 🥸🎸🥸-

Thanks Garry. I tried to do the fast run Brian did and couldn’t really do it. I came up with my own slower version of that. Fun lesson.

Nicely done, Geoff. Love how you handled that fast lick in 508. Your playing was really smooth on 505 and nice work on those sustained bends. Great tone on the Guild.

Dear Geoff!!I know how much effort you put into 508 but isn’t the feeling now great to be able to say”I can play a twelve bar blues and I can add as many cycles as I want!!!”?Goal accomplished for both of us❣️💓❣️As for 505 I can’t help but marvel at your speed!!!!Wait to see at what tempoI have played it!!🤣🤣🤣You love Dorian mode and it is reflected in your playing 💖💓💖💓

Excellent, Geoff!
Learning a 12 bar blues is also on my to-do list. That was incredibly well played, the improv was very fitting, and the whole thing just flawless! It’s amazing to see a classical guitarist play blues SO WELL, bends and all the fast note runs, bravo!🎸JoLa

Thanks so much for giving this a listen Jola. EP508 is a great lesson and a very fun one to do.
One thing I can tell you for free is playing blues does not come naturally to me at all. If have been with AM for a little over three years now and it has taken me that long to get to this point with a lot of hard practice.

Enjoying this blues playing.
You have the chops to get it done, bluesy and soulful!
Thanks for this beauty!-

Geoff-
I certainly enjoyed your 508; very hip. Your bends make their mark and your overall tone w/reverb nicely embellishes your presentation. VERY TASTY.505- You come out blazin’. Played smoothly and with confidence. Your handling of that long bend at 1:19-1:22 was masterful. Man-you nailed this. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much John. You know I always appreciate your comments. I had to put in a ridiculous amount of work into 508 to get anything close to what I wanted out of it so it is very gratifying to hear the bends came out well – I have always struggled with those.

Geoff – I always admire the emotion that you inject into everything you play. I enjoyed both videos but preferred the smooth sweet vibe of the first one. Your improvisational skills keep getting better and better, as is clearly evident in the second video. Kudos, sir.

I never get tired to hear some good played blues, like yours, Geoff. You nailed these fast runs in Ep 508, but in my opinion it began to shine at the moment you start with your own improvisation. I enjoyed it very much. Equally i enjoyed your groove in your rendition of EP 505. It spreads so much good mood. Great work, Geoff.
Take the chance to meet your AM friends on Zoom
The next Meetup is expected to take place in November 2025There will be a detailed announcement here in the forum in good time.
I look forward to meet you.

Thanks Manfred, your comments are too kind.
I seem to come up more and more with my own stuff on Brian’s lessons. Maybe that’s a sign that I am learning something from what he teaches us – I sure hope so 🙂

A double header Geoff! Brian has put out a bunch of quality lessons for us recently. I wouldn’t have noticed the timing on the first bend of 508 as I don’t know the lesson well enough so it worked for me as did everything that followed. You nailed this little fast licks that pop up between the slower ones too. And thoroughly enjoyed your take on 505 too, the improve had a real Santana vibe to it, sliding between the pentatonic and Dorian scales. Such a cool sound.

May 23, 2023 at 11:37 pm #343779
Thanks Andy, I have always been a huge Santana fan and I guess his sound influences me quit a bit especially when I am playing Dorian mode.
I actually found EP508 a lot harder at least for me. It is not as fast as EP505 but I spent literally ages trying to get the bends nicely to pitch and the guitar tone as I wanted it. There really is a lot to take away from EP508.

Really nice work, Geoff. You should be proud of the progress you’ve made. Some really nice articulation in the 508 piece. And I thought you looked and sounded really comfortable on the 505 piece, especially as others have mentioned, on those sustained bends, really nice timing on that.
It’s also impressive to me that you’re able to make progress on your electric blues like this, while still keeping up your classical chops. That’s a lot of work!

May 23, 2023 at 11:42 pm #343780
Thanks Richard, I was actually pleased with 508 because I put a ton of work into it. Playing blues does not come naturally to me at all but I sure enjoy trying 🙂
Every day I split my playing between classical and electric. Classical is my true passions but I really enjoy doing the electric stuff as well. As you know, there are a lot of things one can do on steel that are impossible on gut string guitars.

Hey Geoff,
Well, you put in the work and you got the result.
508 is peppered with tricky stuff and I thought you handled that extremely well.
505 was no different and it looked like you got the vibrato going on one of the bends – no easy task.
You should be really proud of these 2 subs Geoff you’re making big progress for sure.
Look forward to more.
Liam.

Thanks Liam, putting vibrato in bends is one thing I am trying to get better at. Progress is great but just having fun with this stuff is even better 🙂
