Need to work on your phrasing?

  I feel like my phrasing is completely dull and boring compared to this. Around midway through the video, Joe Bonamassa and Warren Haynes get into a phrasing duel that blows my mind:
  
  Note that it’s done on a one-chord jam, and as a budding young bass player, I couldn’t help but notice how the bass player is playing the “and” beats while the drummer plays the 1, 2, 3, 4 beats. That gives it a really cool pulsing sound, which I’ve heard before, but never really analyzed how it’s done.

  Yeah Steve, two of the best in the business! When some guys play together it is nowhere near this good. These pros know how to play off one another in a way that makes the whole band shine. Warren doesn’t have the same name recognition as Joe B but his body of work with Allman Bros and Gov’t Mule is outstanding. His voice just cuts right through to the soul! Nice post and I’ll get to work on the phrasing thing tomorrow.

  Warren Haynes is so amazing in all that he does and teamed up with Joe Bonamassa just adds to it. Look at all that Warren has recorded over the years, he constantly has a project in the works and he never sounds repetitive.
  Warren’s time with the Allman Brothers was great, his work with Dickey Betts was so vital in bringing that band back to it potential.
  
  Near the end of Soulshine and Desert Blues, Dickey and Warren play off of each other much like Warren did with Joe

  This Warren’s first solo album, he recorded it in his early days with the ABB and before Gov’t Mule.
  It was a shadow of things to come and there isn’t a bad song on it

  Wow, amazing stuff Steve. Wish I was at this concert. I think our phrasing will always be dull compared to this. I’m trying to understand playing lead around chord shapes as per EP514. Somehow, I don’t think that’s what they are doing.
