Hi Brian, In my opinion, your explanations are what make your lessons so valuable, and above the fray. I find that if I understand what you’re doing, I can use those ideas ai a different time, when they fit. My vote is to not change what you do so well. ✌️😎🎸🎼

Yep. This is why I’m subscribed to AM and not another of the many sites. I need to understand the “why” of what I’m playing.

Exactly! Many sites tell you how to play something without explaining why, leaving me wondering how they came up with that lick or solo. If I don’t know the thought process, then I’ve only learned that lick or solo, not how to come up with other licks or solos. This lesson was one of the best I’ve seen on AM (and there have been a lot of great ones) – because it really helped me understand how to move between major and minor in a practical way. I also love it because I love Chicago blues…

Your explanations is what sets you apart and the fact that you talk about timing, how you’re thinking when you play and all the nuances makes you in my opinion one of the best in your field ! I think it’s smart to also include a timestamp to keep everyone happy so that they can move right to the lesson if desired.

Your teaching style resonates with me, I love hearing what you have to say and the insights and references to CAGED are helping me start to put what I have learned so far into perspective. I am excited to focus and really dig in and learn this stuff. You are great about reminding us all to not over play and it is very helpful when you talk about phrasing. Ok I could go on! just wanted you to know how much you are appreciated. Many Thanks

Your laid back style and explanations are what sets you apart from so many other guitar instructors.
You make learning the guitar fun and the background information you provide is invaluable.
Don’t change a thing as the way you teach is what is perfect.

Thanks for all the outstanding lessons to help us all be better on our musical journeys no matter what level we’re at.

          Thanks Iain,

Brian is truly a gift to us students who want to learn to be better guitar players. I have been playing guitar for many years but took lots of long sabaticals and never really progressed very much but Brian has been so helpful on my slow journey to improvement. My goal is to be more dedicated in my senior years to be as good as I can be.
I just discovered Micro Lesson 091 and it is truly phenominal. Check it out if you have a chance. Amazing the music one can improvise with using only a few notes.

It’s a special person who possesses great talent who can put himself in the place of the beginner/ intermediate and know that what he does is very successful

100% agree with Frankie D Brian. I have been a member for a few years and have learned more in that time than I had “learned” in the previous 40 years of banging out cowboy chords. I listen to the “why” of many lessons and then try to apply the lesson to a backing track. Only rarely do I work through the “how” of a particular composition, and only when it is in a style that I am very interested in learning. Please DO NOT change a thing!

I agree with Frankie, why consider changing a successful formula.? Your layout helps players of all skill levels.
Beginners need to be told exactly which finger to put on which string/fret,

Intermediate players want to know what scale pattern you use to create your solos.

And more advanced players like to know how and why you picked the chord progression, what was the thought process between combining those cords with that scale.
I can read the tabs myself so I tend to focus more on your commentary. Please don’t change a thing.

You can look for cover versions of well-known songs anywhere but here it’s possible to gradually absorb a real knoeledge about how things work. 🙏100%. I’m late to the affirmation party, but will throw in another. I’ve been playing for 30 years, and in the last few months of being a member here, Brian has made ‘a million’ things click that are starting to become root knowledge and instinct – and it’s all thanks to the ‘talkie bits’; the crazy good repetition of applied theory alongside some sweet playing.

I agree. What you’re doing, is great, never doubt that. Nobody’s forced to watch the entire thing. After watching a video, I’ll come back to to learn, memorize or brush up on a song. Though it’s a great reference for any future questions or absent mindedness if I have it, I don’t watch the intro each time, Those only looking to learn tabs have the same options of skipping ahead, while the rest can ‘learn’ guitar. What you’re offering is the best of both worlds. I fail to see any negatives when when you can satisfy both sides, with a mere click of the mouse. Keep up the good work.

Why are some people such dick heads?

If you don’t explain enough, they complain.
When you do explain they complain it’s too much or there’s too much theory.

Maybe they could post a lesson and show us how it’s done.??!!?? LOL
Everyone learns in different ways, and I think one of the best things about your lessons Brian is that there is something for everyone at all levels.

But most importantly everyone still tunes in – I’m sure they wouldn’t if it wasn’t helping them get better at playing.
Interestingly I don’t hear anyone complaining that you made them a worse guitar player!!!!

We are all better for your lessons so just ignore the internet dickheads and don’t change a thing.

WOW…. What a Great lesson….I appreciate you have other lessons that explain the combination of major and minor in a blues solo…. but for some reason, this one really addressed an outstanding issue that has been restricting my limited playing over the past year or so… when you started the solo off with the E minor Penetontic (which blew my mind – thought you couldn’t do that)) and then moved to the major A over the D chord…. really, a whole new process opened up for me….. THANK YOU….. I actually sound better… what a feeling of accomplishment…… keeping in mind I am 77… not much time left to hit the road…

Hopefully, you do similar lessons over time that really matches the sound to compliment the chord by staying in the key of the song….

    Great Lesson…. and keep talking!!!!!

Another great lesson as usual! I echo the others above. The way you teach is why I have been a member for almost 4 yrs! I read the posts here for each lesson and haven’t really seen any complaints about talking too much. I’m guessing they must be on free YouTube videos which you might want to take with a grain of salt! Keep on doing it your way!

Wow! I need this today sounds just like the day I have had.
It sounds gnarly and today has been challenging to say the least.
Amazing how the blues can turn any ruff time into moments
    vibrating in blissful dimensions.

Also, actually Brian, when you speak, words that are not even spoken by you
come through, means knowledge creeps in from in between the words.
That is a rare gift. And Brian you have it. I can not hear enough talk from you
each word is like nectar and some folks just do not like the sweet nectar
as much as the sour juice.

Keep busting the jams out Mr. B

Another inspirational lesson for improvising! This really sounds great Brian and I just love how you blend in and out of one scale to another as it presents itself. Thanks for explaining your thinking process and being who you are. If you tried to give people gold, some would always find something to complain about rather than be grateful for the nugget they received.

I disagree with those who kvetch about “talking to much.” True, when I’m looking for something on YT, if the talking goes on for more than 30 seconds, I move on. Your materials are different. We users have all the tools we need to find an entry point. If the talking puts us off, we are free to move on to another perspective of the lesson. I see no need for changes at your end.

Like you always say Brian – the aim of Active Melody is to teach people to improvise when playing guitar. Your explanations of the ‘why’ are essential for that context, relevant & I’m never left confused. That’s why Brian will always be THE guitar teacher for me & many others.

If people post negatively about Brian & his fabulous lessons, they don’t love great music or have curiosity to want to know how to write music & improvise.

If you just want to memorise & not learn I suggest you watch the slow walk through, or play along with tablature or follow the pdf. This is also something Brian offers that I’ve not seen anywhere else for a very affordable & reasonable price.

Brian – stay exactly as you are because you’re an inspiration to me & many other aspiring guitarists!

Lesson style and explanation works perfectly for me.

I’m not a natural or virtuoso player – and although I often dive straight into trying to play the piece – I also like to understand the ‘why’ as well as the ‘what’ – and I’m always re-winding and re-playing the sections of the lessons.

If people don’t need the explanation, they can go straight to the Soundslice. If there’s a lot to take in, re-play the explanations!

I think you have a style and format that works for all levels of players – which is why I’m a long-term subscriber. This is the best guitar teaching platform out there in my humble opinion : )

A little slower would suit me but as every one says the explainations and chat are all part of the fun so keep em coming were listenting intetnly. This weeeks blues is amongs the best you have put out there to my mind. I absolutely love it and will have great fun getting these licks down. I am just begining to be able to vibrato a bend reasonably, so now I have a great demo to catch up with and a few of those fast run downs can always make for a nice contrating statement. Should you feel inclined a couple more weeks of this style would be a real treat. You can see how popular it is by the amount of replies so far.

Also many other licks in there that I would like to make my own. Lastly, thanks for letting the Em lick at the beginning in there and explaining why. It’s been exactly those side notes that taught me so much about the Blues and music theory over the years. And that I am extremely thankful for.

In your video (around the 7 minute mark) you say this is position 4 for the A major pentatonic…but wouldn’t these 3 notes actually either be part of position 1 or 3? I don’t see how those 3 notes represent the shape 4 position. Please let me know if I’m missing something and thank you!!

Yep. You missed something. He says Pattern 4 of the MAJOR Pentatonic SCALE. It works out to Pattern (Position) 4 of the A MAJOR Pentatonic. It is just three notes of the pattern., F#, A, and B. You can Google Pattern 4 Pentatonic SCALE Guitar to see the entire pattern. Hope this helps.

Brian, there are many “teachers” of guitar out there on the internet. Unfortunately, many of them are excellent guitar players and very poor teachers. Your style is very detailed, and at times, I admit, I become a little “antsy” to get on with the meat of the lesson. However, your attention to detail is what makes you different and so valuable to a student. I always listen to your full “explanations” and often repeat lessons over time, I have learned more from you than anyone else – you are a great teacher and a great guitar player, thank you.

Brian, I have belonged to other guitar websites in the past and just wanted you to know that you have really taught me a lot about playing the guitar, and now when I go to learn a song or idea I am no longer lost in understanding of what is going on, not that I am at the level you are others are at, But let me just say that sometimes repeating an idea or concept can be the switch that turns on the light bulb for me. Good idea for others out there that may be ahead of the class to put up the clock , for me I also enjoy the background information. Keep up the great lessons, always look forward each week with a new lesson. This is the best place to learn in my opinion.

Superb lesson – keep talking Brian

I’m slightly confused when you say in the first video at about 6:30, “remember we are in the key of A”. Are we not in the key of C which has A minor as its relative minor and no sharps or flats in the key signature, as shown in the manuscript above the tab?

Thanks Brian – I am trying to get my brain around music theory at the same time as improving my guitar technique and in both areas I find your lessons invaluable, the best ‘out there’.

Would I be correct in thinking blues music can be composed in all 12 minor keys and in all 12 major keys too, or are they always (or even almost always) in a minor key? If they can be both major and minor I wonder if you have touched on this point in any of your lessons to date? It might help me, and others like me (if there are any) who get confused by this.

Sorry Nick – I removed previous comment. This song is in the key of A. I’m playing A minor pentatonic and A major pentatonic scales for the lead. Ignore the comment about C. I was just explaining that A minor pentatonic scale is the exact same scale (notes) and C major pentatonic

        Thanks Brian.

I’m trying to get my brain around music theory at the same time as improving my guitar playing so your whole approach is perfect.

In this case if the key is A major rather than C major/A minor shouldn’t there be three sharps in the key signature of the manuscript which accompanies the video tablature breakdown? If not, then I’m still confused about what is meant by a blues in the key of A. Do we distinguish between a blues in A major and a blues in A minor or are all, or almost all, blues pieces in minor key thereby making the question purely academic? Maybe I’m getting too hung up about whether it’s major or minor? This whole area is a source of confusion to me so any clarification would be welcome.

that key signature in the notation is all automatically created – i have nothing to do with it. the gist is this. if the song is in a major key (like this one) – you can play the major OR minor pentatonic scale for the key of the song, or combine them.. however, if the song is in a minor key then you can only play the minor pentatonic scale (assuming we’re just talking pentatonics)

That makes sense – and I think the automatically generated notation simply puts the sharps in as incidentals rather than putting them in as a key signature at the start. All good – thanks for the clarification.

Brian, I wait with anticipation every Friday to see what small gifts your new lesson brings me. Sometimes. Fridays are the best – like a brand new 3-speed bike on Christmas morning, the one I really wanted. Some days the present is a pair of socks – I know I need them, but I was hoping for a bike! Still, the socks are useful and make my shoes feel good. Then there is the 3D chess set… I can play chess – barely – but in 3D it is just, too much. But, I keep the chess set and hope that one day I will be able to play the game with some sort of proficiency. I guess what I’m saying is that every gift may not be perfect, but they come from a meaningful place, from a person who cares about the recipient.
This lesson is not completely new, I’ve watched and listened to you teach this a couple times in past lessons. But you know, every time I watch a lesson on pentatonic scale solos I learn something new. Finally, over the past weeks, your lessons have created that “light bulb” moment and I have jumped a couple ladder rungs and can entertain myself by playing solos with backing tracks – having a blast! They actually sound OK and because of your lessons, I can hear the chord changes and find the roots to make them feel right. This lesson emphasizes this, while the new licks and approach to more complex runs has broadened my learning, again. It’s like getting the socks, the bike and a promise of the chess set, all in one. So, thank you for that!

As for talking too much… I am disappointed to hear that you feel this way because people are saying you talk too much. By adding the “lesson start” at 10:00, you solved any concerns a few people might have. Good on you. I am sure that those 10 minutes saved will change lives, around the world… I echo what the vast majority have said, this is why I stay with Active Melody and have dropped all the other courses I started with, including private lessons. Private lessons have a place, for sure. But, in a half hour session, there is very little room for explanation. And it is the explanation that is what we are learning from. And as far as you talking too fast? This could be a cognitive thing for some people. I would suggest we watch the lesson through and then grab the guitar and follow along a second time – works for me!

So, please keep up the gift giving and I will keep receiving, and learning and enjoying!
    Thank you.
    Paul

Great lesson as always but I have to say that I’m not overly keen on this new approach with the tabs up on the screen doing most of the explanation.

I’ve always loved and appreciated the way you take the time to go over each lick in depth and I really hope you go back to doing so as it’s now taking twice as long to learn having to pause and go back way more than before.

    Love and respect brother.

This is an awesome lesson Brian. Your take on blues improv is so cool. And, though many others have also said this already, the talking/explaining is -exactly- why I keep coming here dude. If someone wants just the ‘action’ part of how-to there is the ridiculously great video tab. Talking about it is key to seeding ideas, for me. Things you say more than once, I finally figured out, are sometimes the most important. I can’t imagine less ‘talk’ dude. Nope.

… The magic, and a peek behind the curtain to see how it’s done. Insight into creation. I don’t think we get that so clearly anywhere else. Gives us hope that one day we may be able to do it too 😊.

One of the things I like, and sometimes you don’t do enough of is explanation, I know you’re trying to not over complicate. As guitar players progress and learn the 5 pentatonic positions, then move to playing the chord tones which can take you outside of staying on the same key throughout the song, and sometimes including both major and minor; and occasionally using Mixolydian or other modes of expression. I enjoy the connection between knowing what I’m playing and the mode or position we’re using and changing it for flavor!

Some online guitar guys definitely talk too much, but even though you talk a lot, it does not seem excessive to me (though the time stamp is a good idea). I really like the interactive tab, and what really sold me on your lessons is that you seem to be one of the few online teachers that focuses a lot on mixing lead and chord-based leads with rhythm, which is exactly what I want to get better at, so thanks for that! Yes, yes to your comments and occasional rambles. They are treasures. You are a “good friend” who has come by today to share a couple new thangs. Your first few minutes set the whole deal up. Please keep them coming.

This lesson is great. The piece just screams Chicago Blues without being impossible to play. Or to listen to. Your explanations make the ideas transportable.

If you keep this up, I may actually learn how to play !!

I’m sure not the first to express it, but, my sentiment is just as emphatic – keep ’em comin’ just the way you do! Sure, a timestamp indicating when the playing starts is a great addition, but, not a substitute for your fine descriptions. Keep up the excellent work, please!

I don’t think you would have built such a great program unless you kept thinking of ways to change or enhance all elements of it. I believe it’s great to see you continue to do so even though I am not one of those that does not understand or appreciate your explanations. They are quality! Everybody has a little bit different learning style and one can always speed it up or slow it down as needed. It’s the beauty of technology in my opinion. One suggestion in the interest of time might be to ramp up the number of “micro lessons” a little (which are great too) because they “cut to the chase” quite a bit and our most valuable to those short on time. Thanks for all you do …

In agreement with everyone else. Your explanations are what gives total dimension and depth to understanding guitar playing.
You say it all the time, “I hope a light went on for some of you”..
THAT’s what your discussions do.. help the light come on, rather than playing by rote imitation.
I imagine some are happy to simply learn how to ‘go through the motions’.. please don’t let that subset of people dictate how you do what you do.

Great lesson! Needed a nasty blues lesson like this.
Excellent composition, but what makes these lessons truly great are the looping backing tracks and that your compositions fit perfectly with the loop. Can play them over and over, and get better and better.
FYI others – the intro section (Em lick and the descend into Am pentatonic) – only play that once. Can loop the rest over and over, starting with the nasty Am pentatonic lick.

Brian, I’m late to the party but need to add my 2 cents. I can understand why someone might complain about you talking too much, but they are missing a huge portion of the lesson if they just want to jump to the notes. It is the explanation that allows me (and apparently a LOT of your students) to have a better understanding of the method, technique and theory, you are sharing. I would encourage those who are impatient and just want to jump to the playing, to try to focus on what you are saying. There’s a reason for it! You’re a great teacher and I have shared your site with many friends.

I’m even more late to the party but also want to encourage you to keep doing what you’re doing. I like knowing the “why” behind the “how”. That’s a big reason I joined AM is your clear explanations. I will admit to liking the time stamp though because some lessons I listen to them several times (because it takes several for it to sink in for me). That lets me go quickly sometimes to what I’m looking for. Regardless of that……please don’t change. Thanks

Hello Brian, this lesson that I have been working on all week… it’s like a “feeling” class… yet, feeling cannot be learned or taught a priori. Well, that’s what you manage to do here !
For the current debate on the importance of speech, I agree 100% with the favorable opinions. I start my 9 year with Activemelody.
Every Saturday morning and the new lesson is a pleasure, always something to glean, some obstacles to overcome, some notions to understand.
I have two other internet teachers, jazz or gypsy oriented, but you are unquestionably the best at making people want to, sometimes resisting the temptation to give up.
Your formula is the right one, it is almost magical!!!

Unique to get a actual teacher that plays well and can provide an understanding of the “why” behind the playing on in so many different styles! This has been my best investment in guitar lessons for years! Don’t change anything and ruin a good thing! Appreciate your attention to the details behind the lessons don’t pay attention to the players that skim over the theory, they can get those kind of lessons all over the internet! I am subscribed to your sight for a reason, its GOOD! I believe that the explanation is invaluable if you want to truly “learn”. if a person wants instant gratification, and just TAB so that you can get to the amp, then go to a tab website. You are TEACHING, and that involves explanation. Your methods are perfect, and I personally learn MUCH MUCH more from your dialog. So, my 2 cents is…..keep on as you are mate. Your vocal instructions are successful and critical to your lessons. You are providing us with the lesson, complete information that we need to know and that surrounds the lesson along with answering questions that you know will be asked. Therefore, just tell us what is on your mind all the time as this is how we have learned to improve over the years and keep coming back for more.

I can’t believe how long it’s taken me to scroll through all these comments to find the box where I can actually ask a question! This number of comments must surely be a record!! And I don’t suppose there’s a hope in hell now of getting an answer.
But I wanted MORE of an explanation on the first three notes of this piece … 1st note, bend on fret 14/string 3… How do i stop the 4th string from sounding when executing that bend? Same for 3rd note, 15th get 2nd string – the top E sounds. Makes the phrase sound messy….
I bet you could have explained / demo’ed that in 15 secs Brian… time well spent!

    Thanks for another terrific lesson!

Finally got around to revisiting this after a lot of ongoing scale practicing in the meantime; I added it to my “Top Hits” custom category when it came out.

I’ve got to say this is my favorite lesson so far on the site since it reflects exactly how I aspire to playing an electric slow blues break. So thanks, and keep on keeping on with the explanations as you go along, they make perfect sense. If they don’t make sense to some folks they are maybe jumping in too deep and need to go back to the support material like the Theory- and Lead courses and some of the earlier lessons.

The guitar is about all I have left and I may never get really good but when I record myself paying back what you taught it keeps me going . My healths getting worse so having something like this makes my days so much better . Thanks for all the wonderful lessons and filling my ears with music I can learn myself thanks to you

I liked your comment about targeting the p5 note when going to the fifth chord. You ought to do a soloing lesson about targeting notes like f3, p5, f5, f7, m3, and when to use in blues solos

Keep talking Brian, your weekly lessons would be much more difficult without your explanations and tips.

    Brian,

I love this lesson and am trying to learn it – I’m old and it takes me a while to get these things. When I finally got to working with the MP 3 track…it seems different than the lesson and the tablature. It seems like the ending is different and then it doesn’t start back at the beginning. Is it just me or is there something different about the MP3 vs the tablature?

    Thanks

Brian, your talking is what makes your lessons so brilliant and a game-changer for me.
I imagine that the negative comments about it are probably (on the whole) coming from people who surf YouTube incessantly looking for a ‘miracle’ lesson, never settling on anything.
Ironically, if they stopped and just listened to you, they’d realise they’ve found what they were looking for!

Brian-You Neve talked too much. We often waste education on the ‘young’. I often put lessons on just to listen when I am doing something else. You are always helpful and informative.

I’ve been around here since 2010, and every change you have made has been positive, always an improvement, but please, don’t cut back on the talking and explaining, some of us have hard heads, ain’t so smart, and it takes some repetition to get the point across. I can’t thank you enough for the fun and pleasure you’ve given me over the years.

These responses are overwhelming in favor of the way you conduct this website. Your system of teaching is unique in your approach of creating an original composition based on the principles that you are teaching. The examples are both informative and immediately useful so we always have something to play when someone says, “Play something.” Other instructors do that occasionally, but you do it every week and your series of lessons is priceless. So don’t give too much credence to the gripers. They probably gripe about everything in their lives.]

Hi Brian, I don’t suggest you change anything. The formula you use is perfect. You dont ramble. Instead, you explain everything I need to know and also provide those pearls of musical wisdom that helps the penny drop. Keep up the great work!

Lot’s of videos out there from people who play really well.
You’re the best I’ve found that consistently explains really well.

    Can’t do that without talking.

    Keep talking 🙂

Don’t change a thing.. the theory and your gift for practical application and the incidental theory aspects ARE what is great here.

Brian, I am watching EP508 and you mentioned you were getting some comments about being talking too much. I for one am glad you take time to explain things and try to tie it all together for us. I like the information. Just showing someone which fret to play doesn’t teach you “why”. You need the “why” if you want to improve.

I’ll stick with you mate…..learning the notes is fine, but understanding a little theory is what’s allowed me to improvise, which gives me endless options and the greatest satisfaction.

I’m late seeing this but please do not apologize for your teaching style. Your the best at what you do and have given me so much to create and improve my overall understanding and appreciation of the guitar and my joy with it.

Def keep talking Brian. I’m 3 years into my playing experience and I couldn’t do it without you and your patient explaining and bit-by-bit demonstrating. You have a knack for teaching and getting me to play properly. I love you!… xD

Brian: I really hate to go against the tide but before I do I want to foremost say that your teaching has made me a much better guitar player. I keep going over your lessons and just keep learning. I think most of your compositions (lessons) are very original and very doable for the average guitar player. However, with all of that being said, sometimes when you say ‘why does this note, or phrase etc work?’ and then go off on a tangent explaining in a detail that I really can’t follow and then start playing lots of licks showing how this concept can be used all over the fretboard and then finally get back to the piece you were originally playing. It seems that many of your followers find it very helpful and sometimes I do too, but other times you just get into the theory it that is just beyond me and I find it confusing. I’m not suggesting you change anything as I can obviously skip by the parts that I find overwhelming and continue on the lesson at my own pace. My comments are just for feedback and my bottom line is that the reason I have kept up as a member for all these years is that I’m convinced you are the best instructor out there. Keep up the good work.

    Hello Brian
I’ve come back to this lesson and searching through other lessons. I’m trying to find anything you have done regarding the Blues Scale, the added flat 5th of the pentatonic?

A light bulb just went on! the flat 5th of the pentatonic is the flat 7 of the major scale. Dum Ass!
