“Down To The River”. this is the first time I ever sat down with a multi-track recorder, (a used $200 Vestak cassette 4-track), and this song just poured about in 2-3 hours. I started with a drum track, added rhythm guitar, 2 lead tracks, then bounced the tracks down and added the bass line. I’d always messed around trying to write songs, but this is the first time I had a chance to actually record without a band. Of course I’ve been obsessed with multi-tracking ever since.
The recording is pretty rough, but you’ve got to start somewhere.Yamaha Keyboard (Drum Track)
Eric Clapton Signature Strat (w/ Wha Wha)
Hagstrom Kent Bass
Soundcloud MasteringThanks for listening,
Ralph

I can hear why you are obsessed with multi-track. To my ear it was very well balanced and fun to listen to.
Looking forward to your next one. Thank you.-

Thank You MrO, The sound is primitive, but I think that adds to the retro vibe. Sounds like a Bar Band.
Thanks for listening,

Thanks to you, I am so used to Ableton Lite I couldn’t imagine recording the way you had to back then. It must have required a lot of technical skill and you came out sounding fantastic as you always do.

Thank You Geoff. Analog recording and digital recording both have their pluses and minuses. Analog recording is much more intuitive because your pushing faders and turning knobs and switches. The big downside of tape recording is tape noise. That’s the main reason I quit recording to tape, all of the tape hiss. Analog tape used Dolby A,B,C,D,S noise reduction and it still left a huge amount of tape noise.
I couldn’t believe the clarity of sound when I started recording Digitally. DAW’s can be a pain in the ass, but I think that’s mostly because they offer way too many features which I don’t understand. Basic multi-tracking is relatively simple once you have a few goes at it.
I’m actually a very technically minded person, (I have a Degree in Electronics Engineering so I’m really surprised that it took me so long to “embrace” new technologies. I still don’t have a smart-phone though. LOL
I am grateful to AM, because if I hadn’t joined I might have never gotten back into recording again. Such a great outlet for our creativity. (Thanks Brian).
As always, Thanks for listening and for your comments Geoff,
RalphRalph P.

Hi there Ralph. I agree about all the features that come with DAW’s. When I first joined AM I didn’t think recording was as important as playing well because I had never really performed on the internet before. It didn’t take long for me to completely reverse my view on that. I now think producing good quality recordings is VERY important because I always sounded so blah recording with a cellphone. It has taken me a long time to figure out Ableton Lite and I am only using a fraction of the features it provides.
Thanks to guys like you and Mr. Lehrman I have learned more that I thought I would ever wish to learn about recording and I have been able to do multi-track for some time now. Learning how to multi-track has been a lot of fun because I can now put out classical duets which I was never able to do before.
Like you, I have a technical background so I am pretty comfortable with technology but it has taken me a long time to “embrace” new technologies as well. The smart phone has proved pretty useful for me because I use it to video myself while playing – took some time for me to figure out how to replace the video sound with the DAW sound and that was, yet another, piece of software (Da Vinci Resolve).
Without AM I probably wouldn’t be playing the guitar again let alone recording. I think we can credit Brian for a lot of things 🙂
PS: Recording is not for everybody. For some people it is just too overwhelming or just to much of a pain in the ass and I get it. You do need to have a technical brain to figure it out and I don’t think I will ever stop learning how to do it 🙂
Geoff.

Very well done. I don’t understand much about recording stuff, I just use a cheap camcorder. You are the whole band, amazing.

Nice one, Ralph – great composition and wonderful playing! 👍🎶
You reminded me of my days composing and recording on a Yamaha 4-Track Cassette mixer, bouncing tracks and trying not to loose too much sound quality 🤓 I think I still have some of my old recordings – I might dig some out.
Best wishes my friend 😎

Beautiful Ralph. You always come up with interesting riffs, hooks and harmonized lead runs. I might need a lesson or two. I hope you are well. Peace and good health to you my good neighbor. 😎🙏🎶
