Ever since my teens I have always been a huge fan of Mark Knopfler. He has that classic Strat sound, but he was marvelous on the Les Paul as well. I also love his Celtic Music – songs like ‘Irish Boy’. The man is not only a guitarist but a true musician in the highest sense in my opinion.
I loved this lesson from Brian and have tried to emulate that wonderful Strat sound Mark Knopfler produces – can’t even come close but I sure loved playing this.

Like you Geoff, I am huge Mark Knopfler fan. I think you did come close to his sound. You got the phrasing just right too.

You are right Geoff, Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists of rock music all times, this is truth. I was thinking sequently how old you are? You said that you was a fan of this guy when you was teen… nice playing my friend.

Lights welcome back 🙂 I haven’t seen you on this forum for a while and I hope you are still actively playing. 58 years old and I was around 17 when I first started hearing Mark Knopfler or at least became aware of him – Must have been around 1981 / 82.

So, this is exactly like me, I’m just a year older. My first Dire Straits album was “Communicate”

Very nice rendition of this beautiful Knopfler’s style lesson, Geoff, very well played! For sure to put in a to-do list when I’ll be back!

Thanks Guido. Definitely have a go at it – it’s a lesson really worth playing. It would sound good on any guitar, but do you have a Strat?. A Strat is great for that classic Mark Knopfler tone which, I can tell you, I struggle to get.

Nice phrasing here Geoff.
Looks like it would have taken a fair amount of sweat to learn – a bit surprised it wasn’t all fingerpicking.
Nice Squire also I like the stickers.

I guess I could do it all with fingers. I certainly use fingers with my classical, but I prefer using a pick for playing electrics. Maybe if I had used fingers, I would have got closer to that classic Mark Knopfler sound.

Same here, Geoff. I’ve been a huge MK fan since I heard the first notes of Sultans of Swing. I’ve seen him in concert several times. His songs tell stories. Listen to Romeo and Juliet – “All I can do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme” – incredible lyrics. I can tell you enjoyed playing this. Well done, as always, sir.

Funnily enough I am quite lazy about listening to the meaning of vocals but perhaps I should – I know Mark Knopfler is something of a poet as well as a musician. (A bit like Bob Dylan that way)

Brilliant choice of lesson Geoff and well played. Great sound from your Strat also. I think many of us were influenced greatly by Mr K. and the Dire Straits band and possibly why some members actually took up the guitar in the first place. Keep on pickin’ and all the best. 🥸🎸🥸

Thanks Garry. I think you are right. Everybody wanted to play like the great MK.

Great choice Geoff… Played well. Something I think I might try. Nice mix between chords and picking. You have a melodic touch.

Thanks John. It really is a worthwhile lesson. After listening to Guido do a MK song, I think I should have gone fingerstyle.

Listening again to your brilliant and inspiring rendition of this piece (never tried to play it, but I guess it’s not an easy one), I realized I forgot to mention that I liked very much your expressiveness and your melodic touch! In my very humble opinion, the choice of playing with pick or finger style in this case is just a matter of personal preferences and attitude, and what sounds good is good! And what you played, sounded very good! Ciao!

Agreed Guido. It’s strange, I have always played classical guitar with fingers, but I don’t feel good about using them with electrics or steel strings. I think everything to do with guitars is a matter of personal preference.

Beautifully played, as always from you, Geoff – you’ve whetted my appetite to try this myself 🎶👍
Is it my imagination, or have you changed your look in some way? You look so much younger in this video 🙂
Best wishes my friend 😎

Oh, you are a charmer Mark 🙂 My wife cut my hair – maybe that accounts for ‘the look’.
This was a really fun one.
