Lately I’ve been learning about the Lofi genre, also called neo-soul. Lofi guitarists use 4 string and drop 2 chord grips that allow you to use your pinky and ring finger for little melodic flourishes. And fill licks are a big part of some lofi songs. Here’s an example based on Cornell Dupree’s classic fill licks in “Rainy Night in Georgia”. Once you get the hang of it it’s pretty fun and easy.
Since fill licks are traditionally used to fill in the “spaces” that a vocalist leaves, and since I can’t sing very good at all, I played the melody on a tiny keyboard through a flute-like synth setting. I’ve also moved my music studio into another room of my house – a smaller and warmer room – because winter is coming.

Another top notch job from you, Steve and as usual very educative post again. Thank you! Sounds really very close to “Rainy night in Georgia”. Have you ever listen Randy Crawford version?

Hi Steve
A very unique and original approach to fill licks. I had not heard of the Lofi genre. Played very well, with Lofi fill locks…👍🎶Don P

Very enjoyable Steve. It’s nice to have the melody to contrast the fill licks. It really brings the tune to life.

Never heard of that Lofi thingy.
I couldnt see any difference from regular playing, but your submission sounds nice.
Liked when the bass got in.
Well done.
Sorry for my deft ear and my ignorance.AndréM

Check out Paul David’s tutorial on Lofi/Neo-soul. He does a good job of showing how to develop a Lofi sound starting from basic major scale chords, moving into maj 7 and drop 2 chords, then adding the typical Lofi fill licks. Basically I would call Neo-soul and Lofi just a re-branded version of traditional chilled out soul music, maybe with a bit of jazz fusion thrown into the mix.

So musical, Sunjamr. I love this song in the original version of Tony Joe White. And you did it honour. Great production!

Steve, I thought you were going to deliver something special. It was so beautifully soulful and harmonious. Well done.
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Very smooth and atmospheric. Every note and chord were exactly where they were supposed to be. You said a lot with what you played, and also said a lot with what you didn’t play. Very uncluttered and pleasant to my ears.
Good Job Steve,

Sounded awesome Steve. Again, you’ve thought outside the square, gave a great performance and added some information that I was unaware of. Much appreciated. Great choice of song too. All the best and … we’ve got rain forecast for every day next week! Rainy Days in Melbourne! 🥸😎🥸

I don’t know much about Lofi but it looks like you are having a good time with it. I definitely here the “soul” style licks in it. I think Quist the backing track guy produces music like this too.
Make sure to enjoy the summer before the incoming winter haha!

Very true – Quist has several Lofi and Neo-soul jamtracks that are great fun for noodling.

Lovely relaxing submission, Steve. I’ve never heard of lo-fi so I’m glad you introduced it. It sounded cool and sweet and produced some lovely harmonies with the melody. Keep warm.

Just a really great job putting that together Steve!! The keyboard synth was perfect for this fab tune, and you can’t beat Cornell Dupree’s fill licks on this song!! Again, great job!!

Nice Steve, very mellow and soulful.

What a unique sound you’ve put together here. Terrific, and it has real mood to it. The flutey track was a great back drop for the fingering and finger picking.
I confess, though, that when I saw “lofi,” I thought it was the opposite of Hi-Fi. And I am glad you are getting winter soon and not me. -

Thanks educating us on Lofi. I’ll have to check it out sometime. What a lovely, relaxing musical piece based on that classic. So many awesome fill licks.

Wonderful piece Steve! I really have to thank you as I was just wondering in this period about Lofi style as I’ve heard much about it but couldn’t grasp its technical features, thanks!

Oh yes, that was very nicely done Steve. I’m a big fan of this style and it’s smooth soulful sound with those Cornell embellishments. By coincidence I’d come across a Paul David’s lofi video this week and been working at that too.

Excellent, Steve. You always make it look so simple. I wish it were. If those weren’t fill licks, I don’t know what is. Very hypnotizing to watch you play this. You’re always up to something new.
Keep at it, music man!!

One thing’s for sure, you’re always going to learn something new or realise something that you never thought of before when you see and hear your submissions. It was certainly a Rainy Night and my condolences to you for your oncoming winter but hey, here in the U.K. – IT’S SUMMER! ( so that means it’s windy and rainy and cold) so I appreciate your predicament.

Hi Steve:
Your impact as an “influencer in the guitar wild” is much appreciated. You influence through bringing ideas forward (in this case Lofi), sharing a beautiful rendition of a TJW song, rounding out your performance with other instrumentation, and taking the time to explain everything. Great post. Thanks.
Cheers, Tom

Hi Steve, I still have your melody ringing in my head, you mastered the art of leaving space!

Great submission mate. I’ll definitely check out the lofi thing. Drop 2 voicings are cool bc you can play them on 4 consecutive strings, not that I’ve burnt many of them into my brain yet 😀.
Be kind to yourself (especially when you're trying to play this instrument!)

I learnt a lot just from your description and then the playing just inspired me more! Lofi just got another fan… the call and response sections between your fills and the pan pipe took off 👍🏻🎶👍🏻🎶
