When Sam Lay passed away on January 29, someone asked me to put together a tribute playlist. Here it is. I sure learned a lot about him and the time and place that created the Butterfield Blues Band in the process.
There’s a short biographical film called Sam Lay In Bluesland that’s available for rent on YouTube (that’s also the title of his first album). I would recommend it; it has footage from some of his (silent) Super 8 films that he made in the 1950s and 1960s.

Very cool, Don. Thanks for the research. And where have you been lately?

Hey Steve, I’ve been dealing with sciatica for about 10 months. About a month ago, it got a lot better. Until then, I couldn’t sit down without triggering it (I was either standing or lying down). PT helped me get through it, now I’m going to the gym for a rudimentary workout including 15 minutes on the stationary bike 2 or 3 times a week and it’s staying away.

Thanks Don, loved the ‘walking by myself’ track. Good to hear from you again, hope the recovery continues.

Thanks satellite, I’m glad you checked it out. Sam Lay was involved in so much more than I realized.

Thanks Don,
He sure played with some of the best. Good to hear from you again. Sciatica is the worst. Until you have it you don’t know how bad it is. I’m still doing PT and it helps. Did you see my Bobby Murray post? He was born on an American military base to an Irish American father and Japanese mother. Played with Etta James for years.

I didn’t see that, I’m going to go take a look right now. I’m going to the gym 2-3 times a week instead of PT. PT got expensive.
