        Hi Friends,

Anyone own this little 5 watt tube amp?

I’d be interested in your views if you do….

(link below to a Fender official demo)

        Best wishes
        Gary

          Hi Gary,
I have the 32 watt Custom 68 Vibrolux in the same series as my main amp. A friend bought the 12 watt Princeton with the same speaker and I was impressed with that as well. The reverb and tremolo are beautiful. I’m a little suspect of how much bass response they got out of that little demo. I see the volumes were in the 6-10 range so I’ll bet the demo was pretty loud in spite of the 5 watts. I rarely play mine above 2 or 3 and that’s still more than apartment loud. Still, a pretty nice little amp but if you can, compare it to the Princeton.

Hi John & thank you, that’s super helpful. The Princeton is also on my radar but the home-usability of the 5 watt champ is attracting my interest. According to other reviews, the 10 inch speaker is delivering better bass response than the original 8 inch the 58 champ had.

              Thanks again

No, but I have a Vintage 70’s Silverface Champ and I have to tell you warms up nicely at 8 watts. It rocks nicely with a Les Paul or Strat. Really don’t have to use pedals unless you want reverb. From what I hear on this video, man the sound is fat and deep. Go for it.

                Hi,
I tried it a couple of days ago. I’m also looking for a small tube amp to play at home; actually I do have a Supro Delta King 10, but I realised that it’s difficult to dial in decent tones.
Btw back to the VC; it has glorious tremolo, which I seldom use, though. But it’s super nice! The digital reverb is fine, can’t tell the difference between that and a spring one (my Supro has the latter).
As you know the VC doesn’t have a master volume, just a volume. The thing that I liked the most was when I cranked it, I think above 6: beautiful tube saturation sound! Alas, that would be too loud for home use 🙁
Another thing that disappointed me was afterwards when I saw a video of the PCB circuit… it looked cheap.
I also demoed a Supro ’64 Reverb, which has an 8″ speaker (and a master volume) and has a surprisingly good bottom end.
I wish you a good amp hunting… maybe I’ll open a new thread asking for suggestions on how to get a sound like the ones Brian showcases (I know he has a Kemper).

Hi Roberto & thanks for your reply. That’s really interesting – I plan to try the champ and also the 68 reissue Princeton (12 Watt) as well – I can’t remember if the Princeton has a Master?

I had (and sold) a Fender Blues Jnr a year or so ago as I didn’t love it – but i may try that again too (I had the mark 3, so will try the 4). I wonder sometimes if I just didn’t have the knack of dialling that little amp in properly. I’ve also tried the Tonemaster range – which seem great and also have the multi-step attenuator. Weirdly, the one I liked best was the Super Reverb – a beast that I really don’t need as a hobbyist!

I’ve been down the Helix/Kemper route too. My Helix was amazing (that’s also now sold) but in the end I hated the endless fiddling to get the tone I wanted.

I think over time I’ve become clearer on the main tones I really want. For me, it’s that mythical ‘Fender Clean’, with the option of a little break up. I need this at home-play volumes for my own fun and a bit of recording. I’m not a tube snob either – it just needs to sound good.

Thanks again for your help in my thought process.

                    Gary

                    Hi Gary,

You might have decided on this already but i have had this amp for a few months now and am enjoying it. It is my first tube amp, coming from a Fender Champion 20, and i think it has a good tone. It can be pretty loud if you crank it and i have only done so when the family has been out and can’t complain. I use it for home playing and not playing with a band or live.

With a Player Tele i find it a pretty clean amp with the real break up happening at 8 by which time it is pretty loud. I would say i generally play between 4 and 6 depending on the family, using pedals to get some overdrive. I have seen videos where the breakup is earlier which might be a difference in the pickups or maybe variation between amps. The reverb and vibrato seem good also.

It might be my imagination but I would say the tone gets better from 6 on the volume. A master volume does seem like a good idea so that you can get the breakup at a lower volume but i am happy to use the pedals i already had.

                    Geoff
