Here’s an excellent video that explains the basics (you don’t need much more, really) of iReal Pro – a great program to generate backing tracks based on chord progressions.

Jaime That’s pretty cool stuff. Do you use it and is there a windows version?

Yes, I use it – it’s a great tool for practising – it lets you write chord progressions and choose a style, speed, instruments and tempo, transposing, etc. It also generates nice PDF charts, for example, I’m using it to build a piano score so my son can play with me at EP295, take a look:

A great tool for practising indeed, you can loop parts, or make it automatically increase the tempo, or transpose incrementally.
Unfortunately there’s no windows version, but you can try it on your tablet or phone if you have Android or iOS.

Hi Jamie,
Thanks for the update. I will check it out and the Band in a Box latest sounds like it too may have these facilities. Modern tech is truly amazing.
Thanks

Here’s another video showing a general overview at using iReal Pro for practising:

Jaime This too is a very good video on it. I have been considering moving to Apple for my music stuff, I do have an IPhone, so thanks. Its not for me immediately but perhaps in the coming months. I still need to get my basic playing level up across the board and there is so much here to learn. But I can see its a very attractive package indeed you never know I might stray off the beaten track. thanks

Hey Jaime,
I agree, IRealPro is really a great tool! I love it! There‘s another one which I can highly recommend: Band in a Box! I purchased the new 2020 version a few days ago and I‘m very happy with it! They provide cool plugins for nearly every DAW available. I‘m still trying to find my way through all the possibilities it offers. Very much time consuming, I must admit but a lot of fun 🙂Eric

Ah yes, Band in a Box is a similar tool, never tried it but it looks awesome. Maybe iReal Pro is easier to use as it’s oriented for chord progressions, probably Band in a Box has more features, but maybe it gets too distracting.
I have a pedal called Digitech Trio+ Band Creator, which is basically Band in a Box in a pedal:
It’s quite awesome, you enter the chord progressions by strumming your guitar and then it generates a backing track based on those – but in the end, it gets too distracting for me so I just use a simple looper pedal, and sometimes iReal Pro, that’s much easier for what I need.

Jaime,
That seems to be the danger/temptation distraction. in my mind too much distraction is so easy and not getting the playing done. But never the less what a great bit of kit this is too. Eric thanks for the Band in a Box comments I will be taking a look.
