You got some beautiful tones there, Billy! Wow! Love how you just got back into it again and again 😉 If there were any flubs in there only you’d know because you were trying to play the lesson verbatim but to the listener, this was all nice and smooth!

Nice of you to say Jola, but I’m not the only one who would notice the stiffness in my playing of some of these runs, then there was the little brain fart moments when i couldn’t find/recall the next phrase, good thing is that we all get sessions like this…

Billy,
That’s what practice is for.
BTW, I didn’t hear a lot of flubs.
Sounds good.
Keep on.

When I think I’ve done enough and ready to record, I find there are two aspects or should I call them ‘gremlins’ that are determined that I don’t succeed.
When the ‘Red Light’ comes on, if I concentrate on the detailed notes, timing, tempo, etc., I find I will often forget the next phrase. Similarly if I concentrate on the phrase or sequence and think ahead as to what comes next, I will often flub the riff or lick.My only chance of a successful recording session without a tedious amount of re-takes is to practice the the piece so many times, it becomes automatic, I can then just concentrate on playing everything in the correct order, intro, verse, chorus bridge etc.
This might seem pretty obvious but it works for me ….. Most of the time. -

Like Jola said, the average person would never know that you thought your playing was not 100% good. To me, as an astute observer of Brian’s lessons, it seems like you have the fingering totally under control. Then at some point, you let the jamtrack proceed without you for a while, which is perfectly OK to do. But the fact that you can keep listening to the jamtrack and jump back in at the appropriate time is a skill that only fairly advanced guitar players have. So I would say that the places where you paused, then jumped back in, are entirely due to the Red Button Syndrome. The antidote for that is to record yourself quite often. This helped me: Make a conscious decision to record 3 takes. Then, a few hours later, record another 3 takes. Then a few hours later, do it again. By having 3 recording sessions, it starts to get a bit boring, and you eventually get a kind of ho-hum attitude when you hit the red button. And it begins to feel like you are just playing for yourself instead of for an audience of critical listeners. Also, talk to yourself as you start and finish your recordings. After you flub up for the 6th time, say “This is really starting to piss me off”. Swearing is also good, because it relieves tension and helps your focus. After a while, recording is just another day at the office.

Oh there’s nothing advanced about my guitar playing Steve, gave me a bit of a chuckle did that.
Listening to what’s going on in the backing track is surely what we all do so that we can take our cue from the other instruments?, it’s a repeating loop.
I recall Brian say in one of his lessons on how important it is to be able to hear what the other players in the band were doing, that’s how I am trying to train my ear.
My point for doing this post which I am glad to see that you picked up on was indeed “the red button syndrome” and how it can affect concentration, the second point to my post was not to give up or stop playing entirely when a phrase or two gets mucked up.
Thanks for your input, it really is much appreciated...Billy..

Hey Billy. First of all I thought your playing was fluent, tight and with great feel. In regard to your post, kudos for recording when you know you’re not completely happy with your performance (although really it sounded pretty damn good). For me I need to practise over and over countless times before I record and I must concentrate 100% on the current note and phrase and not start thinking ahead. As soon as I do that I’ll stuff it up! Also when we all watch performers we never really know whether the performance was spot on because they play on regardless. If they continue to look confident, use positive body language and very importantly ‘keep the beat’ then no one notices. All the best with your playing.

Thanks Garry, I suppose we all try and analysie(sp) our own playing different ways, even though we all face the same challenges our recipes for success differ greatly to achieve the same results.

So smooth. We need music like this to listen to in times like now. Thanks for posting.
Doing any biking? My cycling Okinawa is on hold due to this dang corona stuff. The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Doing any biking? My cycling Okinawa is on hold due to this dang corona stuff.Ive been out twice on my motorbike since lockdown was introduced back in march, we were restricted to no further than 5 miles from home, but its amazing how many miles can be done in a decreasing circle.
Restrictions have been eased now and from monday there will be no distance restriction, pubs and eateries will open on Thursday though social distance of 2mtrs will still apply.
31st of July is when shielding lockdown will lift, so thats when i’ll be aiming for going back to work.
Its been something of a mental slog Pete being locked up with someone with dementia, feel im going a little batshit crazy myself at times..
Hope you and the mrs are coping ok mate...Billy..

It was the lesson dedicated to Phils partner who was very poorly at the time, “lovely lisa” I think Brian titled it...Billy..

Billy,
We are always our own worst critics! That was very nice. When I’m playing and I make a big mistake, I’ll play it again right away so my audience thinks, “Yeah, that was way different, but he did twice, so it’s gotta be cool!” LOLBob U. (aka Bobby Ut)

Very nice piece of music, Billy! I really enjoyed the relaxedness and the melodic lines, you played the licks beautifully.
No doubt you made a few mistakes but I did not notice them. The player himself always does, even if it sounded good anyway, because he/she might have had other intentions.
Best regards,
PatrickPatrick
