Can anyone explain why the TABs are not written as they appear in the videos? As an absolute newbie this just makes things harder than it needs to be…

So not despair, Phil. I would estimate that the tabs are correct about 99% of the time, but sometimes Brian plays a little bit differently. He refered to that in previous lessons. We had several discussions about this issue here on the forum with differing opinions. You should be able to find them through the search function if you are interested.

Phil as Tremolow says most tabs are entirely accurate. Occasionally there is a mistake and sometimes you will think its not right when in fact it is, but the notes are almost hidden by the smoothness of the demonstration. Don’t get too bogged down by this.
You will find that if you play along with the Soundslice video that you will either pick up the difference or make your own way through. This is in fact also an inadvertent educational element. The world is as we all know not perfect and its true here too, so that tiny bit of improvisation that you might make is all part of becoming the musician you ultimately strive to be. Thus the few inconsistencies that you may come across may not actually be a bad thing because they make you stand on your own judgement briefly.
If you do find what are clear and definite errors email them in a Heads Up to Brian and he will most likely quickly correct it. Note if doing that quote the bar number and exact location etc.
Hope that Helps

I agree with both the folks above. Brian is normally accurate. What I do is write out the notation from Brian’s notation and in that way I find if there any mistakes (which are very few indeed). I do not really use the tab. I note that occasionally Brian does play a little differently from his tab/notation. However, this is normally easy to spot. Try to do what Brian does in the video.
Please persevere – Brian’s tuition is truly good. Brian JH

Tabs are very accurate. If they aren’t or are any way inconsistent, that is an open invite to cheat, ad-lib and or improvise. 😁

Yeh, there’s been heaps of discussion about minor differences between the tabs and the way Brian plays it in the videos. Like John H says, I view it as a good thing, because it gives me some options on how to play the lessons. Normally I choose the easiest way….or just make up something that sounds good to me.

Don’t despair Phil, are you talking about the Blues Lead Guitar Course? There is a discrepancy there. If that’s where it is, let us know—everyone asks that question.

Hi guys,
I don’t think I expressed myself very well in my question. I wasn’t suggesting the TABs were incorrect, rather the position used in the video is not the same as that shown in the TABs. For example, Pattern 1, Lick 2 in the PDF shows fret 5 as the starting location, however the video depicts fret 8. As an absolute beginner I’m finding that a little confusing, not wrong.
I’m happy to be guided as to how best use the materials provided. As background, I have jumped straight into this blues course as my fist course.

Hey Phil, it was hard to figure out. There is an explanation—the tabs are written in A and the videos are in C. Brian is going to straighten it out at some point, but that’s just a small part of the website.
Tab is a really imprecise way to show sound, but it’s about the best for guitar if you aren’t trying to study theory. It helps comprehension to learn things in a few keys, so, while it’s harder, in general, you get back what you put in.
Thanks for mentioning that. Maybe Brian could append a note to the description of the course in the meantime.
